I have a site that has been climbing in the rankings and was on page 2 of Google for the main keyword and on page 3 for a few others. The site is 5 months old, I have been consistently getting back links to the site (around 12-20 per month at this point, and I thought it would be on page 1 within the next few months. Today, it has totally dropped in the rankings! I still see the domain in the index but the site has vanished to under 700!

Now, of course I have had this happen before with other websites but I can't pinpoint anything that was done wrong with this site. I had changed the site title but this was 3 months ago and Google had already indexed that change and actually increased its rankings.

The only thing I changed was I hired a new employee to build back links to many of our websites but this just started a few days ago. Those links could not have any influence this fast could they?

This happened with another site that I launched at the same time as this one. They are both using the same WordPress theme.

My questions are:

1) Do you think the new back links could have done this?
2) Could a wordpress theme be an issue?

I understand no one will know for sure but it is great to get some else's input.

Thank you

Where did the backlinks come from?

You were doing great by slowly building backlinks. Is it possible the service you are using suddenly started blasting backlinks?

If you went from less than 1 a day to like 500 a day, this might have looked fishy.

But impossible to know just from the above info...

      Thanks for the response Jeremy.

No, there have not been any large blasts at all.

I am using BuildMyRank (about 1 link per day), AMA (random amount of links each month but there have been maybe 20 indexed to date), and manual link building (profile, forum posts, blog commenting etc..). I have always had great success at building slowly. I said about 12-20 links per month because so far that seems to be the average of links showing up in my back links so far.

      Thank you

You may be penalized by Google,

Following reasons may be affect your site
    1. Got any link from spam sites.
    2. Getting more back links within short span of time.
    3. Xml sitemap error
    4. Forcing to getting link from other websites (through gadget and widget)

    Solution
    1. If you have webmaster central account (Google) submit site map on there.

Thank you everyone for the help.

Does it really matter where your links come from in terms of getting penalized by Google? I have good quality back links however, if Google penalizes a site based on where a back link comes from then it would be so easy to knock off other sites simply by building spam back links to their website.

I am averaging about 12-20 back links per month so far. I didn't think this was too many. Maybe I am wrong.

I have the site submitted to Webmaster central site maps and it says it is fine.

That sounds normal, seeing that your site is new. I also have a site that's about 9 months old, and it reached page 2 then dropped to page 43 (for some keywords).

Just keep building links and you should be fine. Normally, about 10-12 months after you build/register the site you should stabilize on page 1 (considering you have varied your links).

      Thanks Kelvin12.

I have seen this happen as well. I have had sites climb in rankings and then drop back a few pages. However, this site dropped out to under 700! That I do not understand. I hope it comes back as I put a lot of work into it.

Did this site ever come back and rank again?

Just a quick update on this. Yesterday, 6/7/2011, both of these sites come back into the rankings.

Wartrol Reviews - Does Wartrol Really Work?

went back to page 1 and page 2 for the respective keywords.

        Breast Actives

came back into the top 100 after 3 1/2 months of being under 700.

Needless to say I was happy to see this. Unfortunately, today, they both are right back under 700! I am really not sure why. This is so strange.

On wartrolreviewed.com I had made a few on site page changes about 2 weeks ago just to the text but I don't see why that would have done this just after one day.

On breastactivesworks.com I changed the theme about 1 month ago hoping it would help but left everything else in tact. So maybe that could have caused an issue but not sure why it would come back up and drop off so fast.

These two sites seemed to have stabilized. I have two other sites that keep bouncing around though.
