You can either use Market Samurai or Google Keyword tool.

Although one is a paid tool, both get the job done.

If you are using the google keyword tool, you can see how many searches a keyword phrase has. I always check "exact" and not "broad" over on the left side under "match types."

You will also be shown "competition" by a box that is filled in a certain amount. The less it's filled in, the better (the less competition there is.)

If you want some exact numbers for competition, go to google and type in the keyword phrase. See how many sites there. I always put "allintitle:keyword phrase" (not in quotes) which shows how many sites are optimized for their keywords in the title.

by looking the number of "competing pages" will not give you the truth competition data.

what you need to do is analyze the top ten page on the 1st page of google result. that's your real competitors.

just install SEO for FIREFOX addon, then analyze the PR and backlink page of those competitors

Some factors to determine how strong is a competitions :
- Number of results for "keyword"
- Top 10 results for "keyword"

If you have 2.0s on the top10, you can for example say it's an "easy" keyword.

Besides looking at the number of competitors for the keyword you are analyzing, you should look the strenght of the ones ranking at page one in order to see if you will be able to outrank them.
To do it, you can use a free tool called Niche Market Finder

The competition bar on the Adwords Tool doesn't show the SEO competition of the keyword, it shows the Adwords competition of the keyword. The green bar will tell you nothing about ranking for that keyword in the Google search engine.

Get the SEOQuake firefox add on, turn it on, search the keyword and use look at the PR, backlinks and age of the top 10 results in Google, that's a vague indicator of competition.

I use the SEO competition module in Market Samurai as well.

Another good tool - for checking competition of the word -SEMRush. Researching keywords is similar to MS, but SEMRush is cheaper.

oh man. Adwords gives you the PPC Competition which is completely different to the SEO competition when you want to rank organically.

Yeah but it sucks cause you have to do it one at a time. Which takes forever.

Traffic Travis is great at doing competition checks in bulk but you only get 20 searches per day

Nothing is better than google for searching keyword competition. Just search your keywords in both way "broad" and "exact" and you will find perfect competition for your keywords. If your keywords is "SEO training" you should search it both way in google for e.g.

SEO Training
"SEO Training"

then just see how much searche pages google find. That can be called real competition. So always try to find competition in google because its most perfect than any tools.
