On Page is very powerful, and is what determines your initial rank.
Off page is Important because it gives your page authority in Google's eyes. And allows you to rank well with higher competition.
The great thing about off page is that there's unlimited possiblities for how you can better the rank.. You can create thousands of backlinks while there's so much and no more you can do on page.

Off Page is a bit more important, but on page is very significant.

i like off page more because there's no real limit as to how much you can do. the harder you work, the bigger the payoff (most of the time).

onpage seo is a huge optimization problem that can be solved (not that its easy)

Onpage comes first than offpage. Don't think that massive offpage can outperform sites that have better onpage because content matters. The number of visitors that like your content and click around your site determines how well you rank. So because of this, I would have to say that onpage is more important however you cannot rank without a good offpage optimization.

But in all honesty some basic offpage optimization, along with extremely well optimized pages will yield in greater results than a ****ty content, and a massive backlinks to support it. Backlinks can only help you so much, you'll still need to use social media like facebook and twitter to your advantage and all those elements require good content if you want to get noticed.

They are both important. I agree that you should tackle the onsite optimization first - the content and using keywords within the content.

Then you can work on the offsite - getting links back to your site. You can do it simultaneously, but if you only have time for one at a time, do the onsite first.

      Success to you!

If you are trying to rank for a specific keyword, the benefits of offpage SEO far outweigh the benefits of onpage SEO. It's not even close. A poorly optimized page can still rank high.

Google "Click here". The first listing is Adobe. Nowhere on that page, in the title tags, or in the URL will you find "click here". It is not optimized for this term in anyway whatsoever. Yet it is #1 out of almost 3 billion listings.

I'd say if I had to choose, it would be off-page (links).

Links are 80% of the game. You could have a horrible website, bad title tags, bad mark-up, etc... and with the right amount of inbound links coming into your website, rank for all your anchor-text keywords.

On then, the next "off-page" factor that will be huge is your "social proof footprints". Those are going to be like "links" and again, will be huge for ranking in the SERPs.

It would definitely be off page SEO for me. You can't rank a site with just the on page SEO for a competitive keyword, but it is possible to do the reverse and only use off page SEO to rank.
