Hi Everyone,

Will building 5 in-anchor backlinks with the keyword "Dog training" improve my landing page score and thus quality score compared to the same page with no back links when bidding on the term "Dog training" in adwords?

Many thanks,

Sam

No. Quality Score has nothing to do with backlinks. There are two main components to QS. There's keyword relevancy. Simply put, your keywords must relate to your page. So if your page is about dog training, if you choose the keyword "horse riding" that is not relevant. This accounts for about 25% of your score and you either are relevant or you're not, you can't be half relevant.

The biggest part of QS, about two thirds, is your CTR compared to competitors. This is normalized by position. The mean QS is 5 so if yours is also five, it means your CTR is average. Nothing you do on your page will increase QS. Quality is measured mainly by how often people click your ad. If more people click, Google figures your ad is good and thus of a high quality.

But what about your landing page surely that effects your quality score too?

It will affect as far as keyword relevancy is concerned. Like I said, if your keyword is "dog training", the landing page better be about dog training .

It will also affect if you don't follow their rules. There's basically fixable rules and non-fixable rules. Example of fixable rules are if your page is a bridge page or using misleading/inaccurate language or any other rule found in the site policy guidelines. A non-fixable rule example is using more than one account to promote the same site. Not following the rules gets you a QS of 1 which is the off switch and your ads don't show.

But if you are relevant and follow the rules, work on increasing click rate.

Thanks Lucid, thankfully my landing page is highly relevant to the keywords. I've also emailed a contact from Google to get a review before I start the campaign since I don't want to spend hours building up keyword lists/ads only for the whole campaign to be shut down an hour later.
