Panda & Low Value Pages

I noticed a couple of my sites had dropped in ranking but could not understand why.

One of my website which targets a very low competition keyword phrase & has an exact match domain was holding strong in the number one spot.

However I checked in on it last nigh & it's dropped to page 2. All the content on the site is unique & I have a few back links from blog posts on topic relevant sites.

I just could not understand why the site had dropped. After reading a little more about the recent Google Panda update I read that a "Low Value Page" on a site can affect the whole sites rankings.

So I had a look through the pages on my site to weed out any low value pages. I had one page which was a product comparison table, just rows of products which said "yes" or "no" about certain features.

The table had affiliate links embedded into a button & picture of the product. Now what I'm thinking is if Google craws this page it just looks like a page full of affiliate links with no content. - Could this damage my sites rankings?

So now I'm thinking about other pages like the "easy privacy policy" page plugin that everyone uses & my short "about us" page. These would be perceived as "low value pages" by Google & could affect my whole site.

Is this true that if I have one or two extremely low quality pages that they can affect the ranking of the whole site?

This sounds a little crazy to me, so if someone builds a site with the best content ever written on it but adds one poor page then the whole site will be affected, surely this can't be true?

  • I don't think that just a few "low value" pages can effect the site. I also have "about us" and "privacy policy" pages that are short, and my site is ranking on page 1 of Google for 10 keywords. It hasn't lost its ranking because of this. Perhaps your competitors have just been building more anchor text backlinks to their websites. Backlinks are ultimately what will determine you website's ranking in Google. Hope this helps.

Perhaps your competitors are doing more work that counts.

Backlinks DO NOT ultimately determine your ranking in google. I have no idea why
that idea still is believed by some people. This is May 23rd, people.
May 21st has come and gone. Get back to reality.

There does not seem to be any real competition for this keyword phrase.

There are 3 classified add sites on the first page & a couple of high street retailers.

My site dropped a full page so it's not from competitor back linking.

I've deleted "low quality" pages, bulked up the content so no page has under 400 words & ran every page through Copyscape.

I'm going to create a few back links now & wait for it to be re crawld, hopfull it will bounce back.

I do this for a living and it happens all the time to me. I add a bit more content (schedule a few posts for the next few weeks) and then get more backlinks, usually in a week or two the site is back on top.

Don't mean to be rude BUT Google is always playing tricks on people. They call it Panda, Banana, Manjana, whatever... but these are "marketing" and "pr" stunts to keep people entertained.

Plus, in this update your site goes down, but in the next one it will move again. Just do what you're supposed to do (feed him more unique authority content then your competitors + promotion) and you'll be fine.

As soon as you clear your mind of all the Pandas of this life, you'll be way better.

    Trust me on this one.
