How to exactly analyze certain competition?

Usually right when I see the competition I'm up against in MarketSamurai I know If I can compete or not but i've been second guessing myself with some odd results, for example..

#1 pos - PR 4 (200 backlinks to the page)
#2 pos - PR 4 (100 backlinks to the page)
#3 pos - PR 3 (11 backlinks to the page)
#4 pos - PR 3 (0 backlinks to the page)
#5-10 - PR 0 (0 backlinks to the page)

As you can see the PR isn't too bad and the backlinks are next to nothing on the page that's ranking but from #1 all the way to #10 are all big authority sites like amazon, nextag, etc and I have no idea If I'll be able to jump right through them or just because they are such big sites that I won't be able to because of the domain age, page rank, backlinks to the site as a whole.

Any insight? I've ran into this problem many times and always shyed away.

  • The real question is what PR are those backlinks? Out of the 200 for the first one, how many are above PR3? If you haven't already, in the SEO module, click on the little arrow next to the website name, then on the PR button. This will show you each backlink and it's PR.
    Basically if you think you can beat it, then I would go for it.

    If they have 20 PR 4 backlinks, try to get them as well. Then look at the next website and see if you can get the same high PR backlinks that they have as well.
    If these PR links are coming from blog comments, there is a good chance you will also be able to get them to your site.
    It's powerful stuff, so make sure you try it out.

    • Okay I understand that, but do you have experience going up against amazon, nextag, and all those high authority sites even though they have weak backlinks to their page?

  • Great tips, I've certainly taken these in as well... I've been wondering the same thing about the "big boys" so to speak.

  • any review or shopping sites are usually fairly easy to outrank as long as they dont have lots of links to the page

    by the page just having a pr of 2,3,4 or higher doesnt mean it will be hard to outrank

    if the page has a reasonably high pr and it has a lot of bk links to the page then it will take some work to outrank them

    you can never be 100% sure though so sometimes its better just to build a site, with good content and build some links and often you may be surprised how well your site does

    as long as all your on page seo is ok and you have the basics in place
