How To Find Out Google Search Rank

I'm very interested to know how fellow forum members find out their Google search results rank position.

I've used various software and/or websites but can't see any consistency as the rank quoted is always different from the actual position.

I can't recommend anything in particular, I'm afraid, but keen to check out your suggestions.

Search ranking position depends on the country it is searched from. Google "google ranking position" and use some of the online services for approximation.

I track manually, as I've yet to find a reliable service (at least, for Google UK)

I use a mix of firefox rank checker, sescout (mainly this is what i use first tbh) and then a manual search to see every so often how accurate the predictions are

Thanks to everyone for your replies. Seems we are all in the same boat. Is there no software or website that can accurately show your search rank position?

Could a Warrior much more clever than me create something? Is this a moneymaker for some one with programming power?

I'm already in the queue to buy!!!

Firstly, the Google Webmaster Guidelines prohibits the use of program that checking rankings, they say 'Don't use unauthorized computer programs to... check rankings... Such programs...violate our Terms of Service.'

However, you can load the page results for a keyword, and show 100 results per page in Google, and search for your website manually. But, if your wishing to breach Google terms of service you can use programs like:
When it comes to the accuracy of these tools, I doubt they ever will be completely accurate, the reasons are numerous, such as:
    • The rank positions vary depending on what datacentre you hit aka the TLD of Google, .com, .au, etc
    • Rankings can change instantly, for example the rank checker tool might have checked 1 hour ago and you were position 4, but now your position 9
    • Rank checkers do scheduled passes, must check a keyword once a day, or even every 7 days, it depends, so they are not up-to-the minute reports. Why do they do this? Do avoid tripping the Google Alarm.
    • Rankings apparently vary depending on browser your using, or IP the query comes from, see the Youtube video

If you mean PR I use SEOquake, if you mean where you rank I just check myself and make sure web preferences are off and I am logged out of google

The only way to get the most unmolested ranking data is to remove as many variables as possible.

SERP variation largely depends on 3 aspects:
    1) Personalization
    2) Country Localization
    3) IP Localization

    1) Adding "&pws=0" to your search url & clearing our your cookies disables personalization
    2) Adding "&gl=[COUNTRY_CODE]" localises your query to a specific country
    3) This is the only variable that cannot be eliminated.

All these software applications should be using the methods I described above. The main problem these applications run into revolves around having to use proxy servers.

Proxy servers are required to dodge Google bans. The largest scraper in the world doesn't like it when you scrape them...go figure.

Now, each proxy server is tied to it's own unique IP address. So if one of the proxy servers IPs is located in california, it will fetch a SERP with a slight California bias.

If your ranking software is trying to find the rank for "sea diving equipment", Google will give more relevance to websites that match that query and are located in california.

This is why you all notice variance with certain web-based services out there.
