If I want to rank for example HDtelevision, does breaking them up like HD television hurt my SEO? Or should I always keep it together in articles etc.

If you are focused on ranking for "HDtelevision" then you want to keep the words together in your articles and meta tags etc.

If you are trying to rank for "HD television" then you want to separate the two words.

Personally, I would use a mixture of both within each article and rank for both terms....killing two birds with one stone

Neither would hurt. Don't try to make it too perfect. It looks unnatural to the bots. Diversify and balance.

there are different terms synonymous to HDTelevision, for instance HDTV, high-definition television, etc. So better yet, try incorporating all.

Why not still play around with the words further-like HDTV,HDtelevision,HD Television,TelevisionHD.

All you need to look out for is to avoid having your article look unreal
