I had about 500 backlinks to my site for the last 6 months which was good enough for the number 1 spot and today i checked and there is only about 100! What the hell happened?! I am still number 1 but i am thinking that can drop as my backlinks are disappearing fast! Most of my backlinks were from Backlink Solutions.

Did you check them with Yahoo site explorer?

Did you know than Yahoo Site Explorer is being discontinued. So their results are completely skewed at the monent. I personally wouldn't trust them whatsoever.

Look for another source. You could try majestic seo, or even your webmasters account.

Have you been doing a lot of forum posting? I had about 100 or so backlinks from forums and I checked a few days ago and all of them were gone. I tried going back to the forums where the links were (Manual Forum Posts btw) and they had kicked me out for inactive accounts. All my links and all my time were wasted. My site also dropped to the 10th spot in the serps.. Good learning experience haha

There is this one forum which I used to be active in and I've lots of backlinks from there yet one day the owner sell the forum and the new owner close it down.

I use an autologin script that logs into my accounts after a couple of days. This keeps the account active and does one more thing -- it puts my link on the home page of the forum in the 'currently active members' or 'currently online members' area. This gets it indexed super fast as well ANd gives a high PR link to me based on the anchor text. I've been doing the same thing for Keyword Dissection members too and seen a lot higher stick rate across hundreds of thousands of links.

Yeah, the question is, what happened to your rankings? Your traffic?

...oh, still number 1 you said! No sense worrying about it too much, just keep the back links up, the site content creation, and see what happens.

Ya you should be fine then. If it is affecting your serps then it is probably not yahoo site explorer. I wouldnt rely on these tools. They seem to be very off from one tool to the next. Just keep building links and dont really focus on the number.

Think about it like this. You can beat out a site with 5,000 spammy links if you had 50 really high relevant high PR links. In the end the number of links do not really matter so try not to focus on a number
