What is the best way to target minor keywords using SEO?

I am in an average positions for my main keywords (about 5 main keywords), playing around the rank 5 to 8 spots for these keywords.

We have been targetting the SEO development of these keywords for a while, and slowly and gradually have we been working out our rankings upwards. It has not yet been moving that much though, perhaps a notch up every month or so, after doing some article submissions etc.

I was suggested to target other minor keywords as well, to work our rankings up with those rankings, that would bring a significant number of traffic.

I was wondering what was the best approach to target these minor keywords?

What I am currently doing right now is that I made a list of these keywords using some analytics tools of the keywords that bring in the most traffic for the past year and then I hired an article writer to create articles with these keywords in the article. Each article has about 300 words, and we target 3 main keywords in each article. One keyword would have an anchor text linking to the main site.

Would it be best to have these articles posted on our blog? What would be the limit of articles I can post on our blog each day? Would 5 articles posted on the blog each day be okay? Also, would this technique be effective to work our rankings up for these minor keywords?

Looking forward to your feedback!

By minor keywords, do you mean long tail keywords?

Somewhat long-tail, but not necessary that all keywords are long tail.

I think you are approaching it the right way. You need to build links to those keywords, plus make sure that they are on the pages that you are trying to get ranked for. If the competition is fairly limited then you should be able to bump them up fairly quickly. Once you get your link count up, you should see some improvement.

I would say try to get backlinks with keyphrases anchor that contain both the minor and the major keywords. That way you still build authority for your main keyword and you get some authority for the minor keywords.

About the frequency of posting on your site, it depends on how large your website is and how often and deep Google robots crawl it. I know for some of my websites the content get indexed right away, and for other it gets indexed in 2 or 3 weeks. I can't push as much content on the second one than on the first obviously. You have to know your website limits.

I suggest that you should have a thorough keyword analysis before you optimize your keywords. You can set as Secondary Keywords as you post links to other forum related websites. Also choose High PR, do follow and viewable links. Lastly, make unique articles and observe correct keyword density upon posting. Google wants fresh articles.
