Blog commenting is one of the easier ways to get started. But prepare to spend some time finding blogs & posting relevant comments. Most blogs these days require manual approval. So be sure to post a high quality comment and avoid spamming your keywords. Even then though, some blog owners won't approve them.

A trick that I've found to be effective is to look at the blog homepage. If there's a lot of recent posts, chances are it's an active owner. Make a relevant comment on one of the most recent posts. If it's approved quickly, that's good. You can then wait a bit and take a look at some of the older posts. Chances are you'll find a few with good PR and very few comments.

Just don't spam away and you'll be fine.

Well, in theory it is difficult to rank high for pages that have backlinks. As for the author he founded his success in an industry where competition is weak as he wrote on his own content, a user fan base would probably be to create links to it instead of himself.

You should do both...There are all kinds of back link building strategies available some are good and some are a waste of time. I have been doing SEO for 14 years and have learned the hard way of SEO down to the dirty road of link building. Link building is a big topic so I would first spend time educating yourself and then get started with it because properly understanding back link building for optimal results is something that is a big part of your success online with your SEO efforts. For better results, you can do all link building methods. There are different methods of link building that you can implement such as directory submission, article writing and submission, blog commenting, social bookmarking, forum posting etc. If you managed to do this, there's a chance that you can get good quality backlinks.

You will not get a good outcome in SEO if you will focus on few methods only. There are many ways on how to build links and you must do it for good outcomes.

Use many different methods as possible. Include different anchor text in links, a little every day.
