Found a niche that has a low competition and I don't really want to go with a keyword domain and I found a good domain with no keywords.. Hmm... Should I go without the keyword? I know google is going to start giving less priority to these keyword domains.. And yes I have seen Matt Cutt's video on keyword domains
#domain #keyword
  • Depends on what you can do with it.

Keyword domains tend to score traffic quicker and get a little extra boost especially in small tight niches.

I see a lot of MFA sitting on Exact Match Domains. I'll always buy an exact match when possible.

Something to remember about Google. They are not the only game in town even though they are the biggest for now. And what Google says and how they can effective implement it are not always matched up.

Yesterday I found the SAME exact article and Title on 3 different sites ranking 3,4,5 for something I was researching. So much for duplicate content eh?

Great response. So pretty much you are saying that its not a make it or break it but its good to get that little boost with the keyword domain? I just feel that the niche that I have found is not very competitive therefor I could rank without the keyword in the domain.

My take is that it make take a little longer to rank without the keyword...

What is your reasoning for not wanting the keyword in the domain?

I think it depends on how you plan getting visitors. There's been a lot of talk about Google starting to give less preference to EMDs but the fact is that it will probably always help a certain amount. The only reason I can think of not going with an EMD would be getting a more memorable (and less spammy) domain for branding purposes.

I think for most of us, however, our goal is to simply build small targeted sites and get traffic through search engine rankings. I personally don't want to nor do I think I have the resources capable of aiming for the long term and knowing that I'll probably only see returns on my investment maybe 6 months or a year from now.

  • I think you should go for the keyword domain, unless you're trying to build a brand. The keyword in the domain will give you extra "SEO points".

I would still do it. Google doesn't care one way or the other - but Bing and Yahoo accept it...

Well there are two main keywords in the niche and I really want to use both keywords which will make the domain name super long. Do you think I should still do it? Ex.- www.myuniquejewelryandclothing.com

Do you think that it will affect clickthrough? or does it not really affect clickthrough and sales?

Why not have the KW in the domain if you can help it?

Personally I am more into building brands than domains, and the long term effect of brands is amazingly good for SEO also (older sites rank like rocket, and adding the KW in the URL is easy even if the domain name does not have the URL), but then if you are more into building the domain for a specific kind of keyword then you may as well go for the KW inside the domain !!

Keyword rich domains play a very important role in SEO rankings. So, if you get a keyword rich domain, then you must go for it.

As for me, with social media getting a good share of the traffic pie, like Google is now intimidated with Facebook's 500 millions users, acquiring a keyword domain, like you said, is not anymore necessary.

We are now at a point in time where in Brand stands longer and solid. For instance, facebook is a social networking site, but would you type "social networking site" on Google to find Facebook? No! You'll type "facebook" or even directly access it on your browser.

Using a keyword domain can mean you're putting up a brand that can't stand on its own and that it is reliant to Search Engines, which means without SE your keyword domain can be nothing.
