Google page #1 (3 spots) to page #7 overnight - help!

My Amazon review site dropped from 3 spots on page #1 to page #7 in one night?!

I released the site at end of Feb, 2011. By March 21st, it was up to 20-30 visitors per day. I ended up having 3 of my posts on page #1 for their keywords.

For some reason, on May 9th, traffic completely died to around 1-2 visitors per day. A quick google search showed that for those same terms, my position had moved to page #7 or higher.

I did not change anything on the site and there are other slightly similar (mine is better IMHO) sites that are still holding their rankings.

I do use Google analytics (is this bad?) and Google webmaster tools. I am showing no errors or malware reports. The site is powered by Wordpress and I have not done any grey or black hat SEO on it and all content is 100% unique. My links are not cloaked (should they be?) and the site is SEO-optimized.

Right now it only has around 5-7 backlinks, but I am hesitant to pay for lots of backlinks based on forum/comment spam.

Any ideas what happened and/or suggestions on how to get it back to page #1?

This kind of behaviour isn't unusual for a site that is only a few months old, so I wouldn't hit the panic button just yet. A new site will often rank higher than it would otherwise deserve to just because google likes to serve up fresh content. your site may have just lost this freshness factor in the eyes of google, and has settled to a more appropriate ranking on page 7. Look to build consistent quality backlinks and you should slowly rise in the rankings.

@powerslave - do you recommend purchasing backlink packages or should I try to do it all myself?

It would depend on A) What skills and resources (money and time) you have, and B) How difficult is it to beat the competition, and how competitive are your keywords.

This type of question gets asked here 5-10 time a day, so I wrote up a FAQ that might answer some of your questions. Check out http://www.warriorforum.com/adsense-...deindexed.html

The panda update killed all the useless content from spam and link farm sites. So if you backlink profile is based on article marketing or purchasing backlinks....chances are Google devalued them...thus your site took a hit

Have you tried using tools like SpyGlass to check your back links and compare them to competitors ? Don't waster your money buying backlink packages. It's not hard to post 20-25 quality backlinks on PR 3-5 sites. I can point you to some sites that allow posts with do-follow links. PM me.

As for Panda and article marketing, I have dozens of articles still showing at the top of rankings for my keywords and are feeding traffic to my sites.
