Why the domain name matters

For a couple of years, I've owned an EMD dot com for a type of patio furniture. A week or two ago, I dragged it out of parking, put up a Wordpress site and put up two pages of text with pictures and affiliate links to Amazon products.

That's it. No backlinking, no article writing - absolutely nothing but on-page SEO and all-in-one Wordpress SEO.

Got busy with other things and didn't get back to it until today.

The site is now #1 on Google for the exact phrase and #2 (behind Nextag) for the broad phrase and making sales on Amazon.

I plan on doing more with it, but in case anyone was wondering whether or not an EMD makes a difference - yes, it does.

Yeh I can confirm a similar situation, I was outranking amazon, wiki and all sorts just with an EMD and no backlinks.

    How competitive is the keyword?

For a very uncompetitive keyword, yes an exact match domain name can get you a page one ranking. Try that for anything with a significant search volume though. It won't work on its own.

Decent volume, low competition. I don't care as long as it's converting. It's doing better than it was parked.

    Great thread.
Does it matter if the domain has a 'hyphen'?

    ex: keyword1-keyword2.com

    Thanks

I have a few EMD's; one of which is www.keyword-one.org (and a .org. It ranks # 2 for 33,000 key.

I also have EMDs.com and in all, if people tell you EMDs are not the thing - they're liars.

Sorry, I can't answer that one, either. I only have one domain name with a stop word in it (the) and I bought it because it was an aged domain with a lot of backlinks.

A little about me - I started buying domain names 10 years ago. I researched keywords and bought a lot of 2- and 3-word EMDs and parked them. Parking has taken a nosedive and I'm slowly developing the sites because just about any revenue beats parking these days.

exact match domains make a huge diff in rankings.. glad to hear you're doing well with it. probably also helps there's some age to the domain too, big G definitely places more trust with aged domains.
