Since all the good EMD's seem to be taken, has anyone done this?

What if all variations of an EMD are taken and you don't want to add either a prefix of a suffix (it'll water down the domain name). I've found that you can add a simple hyphen to the end and it's never registered.

For instance, all variations of electriccars are taken, but not "electriccars-" I understand search engines see the hyphen as a space so is this a good strategy if you're just looking to rank for an EMD when no others are available?

  • You can do that, or do a single number or letter.
  • Only one hyphen in domain gives your domain name seo power equal to emd+pre/suffix. BUT never get more then one hyphen in the domain name.
    Also please notice that hyphen gives your domain less brandability, and your competitors will often missremember the url and go to your competitors site.

    That's why I'd rather suggest using emd+sufix/prefix if EMD is already taken.

    • I heard somewhere that a hyphen was considered a space by the search engines so I thought electriccars- might carry the same weight as electriccars which is better than electriccars1 if I'm trying to rank for the keyword "electric cars"

      Which version will rank easier for that keyword (all else being equal)?
