Why Is Google.ca Ranking Different Than Google.com?

I have been ranking consistently in 2nd or 3rd place when I search for my keyword phrase on Google.ca, yet I am nowhere to be found on Google.com.

My website is just over 1 year old and at one time was ranking in the top ten even on Google.com. I am in Canada so I obviously have a Canadian ip address, but my host/server is located in the USA. My research suggests that my ip address shouldn't matter when it comes to ranking.

I am perplexed with this discrepancy and wondered if anyone has had a similar problem.

Obviously Google.com is going to be the hardest one to rank for since it is the most competitive. If you have any Canadian sites linking back to you that will massively help your local rankings.

As for IP address, i'm pretty sure that wont come into it.

      Thanks James!

I don't have any backlinks for either .ca or .com.

I realize that .com is much larger but just found it puzzling that I was ranked so high on .ca and couldn't even be found on .com.

I've added a post to the site and will submit a few articles and see if I can get some backlinks to help.

IP adress does play a role. I dont remember in which video, but google does primaliry rank you in the engine your ip is located in. So if you have a canadian host, you will be most favored to rank in .ca that being said it doesnt stop you from getting ranked in .com, so it is probably due to higher competition.

    NastyDevil, really?

My IP is based in the UK, I get little if no traffic from UK sources, pretty much all US. Are you not confusing the role IP plays in search results, e.g. I search for "iPhone for sale" it'll bring up both HISTORIC and UK sites very often...

Hosting makes a difference; ranking for .com you want a US host for sure.
