What are the Current Backlinking Strategies?

Ok, so I'm new, and frankly, I'm a little confused. The best backlink strategies vary by year and by the month. At one time backlink directories were all the rage and are now considered shady, and will not help with the google gods at all. Now i'm hearing that article marketing and signature boxes are not helping as much. And so I now humbly ask you: Through personal experience, what are the most effective back linking strategies you have found? Thank you for your time.

    You should diversify your backlinks and not use one single method of acquiring backlinks.

    Some methods include articles, blog comments, web 2.0 properties, profile links, and social bookmarks.

    I'm no expert but I'd say that getting a list (or generating one with software) of high PR Blogs and forums and then answering posts and comments with useful and relevant comments in return would be a good place to start.

      If one is doing this themselves, it is very time consuming, would it be better to focus on a couple of methods. This way one should perfect a sytem and not scatter or dilute the efforts??
