I need help on a domain name

I have local business and I built a web site for it. When I registered my domain I used the name of my business instead of my main keyword.

I am new at all of this but I was reading about Local SEO and found that I could rank better if my keyword was in my domain. So I registered another domain with my main keyword in it.

I have the domain setup as an add on domain at my Hostgator account.

I won't to keep my original website as it is right now because of the backlinks that I have paid a fellow warrior to do on it.

My question is should I do a redirect of the new domain and point it towards the old domain OR can I build a new website "say a single page site using the new domain and using the same keywords as my original site and link back to the pages of my old site from the new site.

  • Just taking a guess here but I'm thinking your keyword is 'Maryville Lawn Mower Repair'?

    If so you're already ranking #2 and #3 on scroogle.org so I wouldn't worry too much about having the keyword in the domain name. I can't drill down to your location specifically but chances are your doing even better locally.

    If it was a more competitive term then yes you should definitely have the keyword but in your case with proper on page SEO and some easy backlinking you should be able to get to #1 for that keyword with the domain you currently have without any major troubles.

    • I would run the first site with the business name in it as the main website, then build links to the second one with the keyword rich domain and use it as a landing page / sales page, you could get a bit more traffic to it, inform the customers when they visit, then link out to the main website.

      I have seen a local paintball company who has done this, although there SEO sucks so they don't rank as well as they should, but it is still working for them.

    • Thanks "Pdrs" So should I just redirect the new domain to the old domain and leave it that. BTW that is my main keyword.

      If I do redirect the new domain to the old domain will building back links to the new domain help get to #1 SPOT?
  • Maybe you can redirect it to your new website. Having two websites will only make it confusing for your prospective clients. In the company I was with before, we only changed the domain name. So technically it is still the old website, it just have a new name. This way, the clients won't be confused and whenever they go to the old website, they are redirected automatically to the new website.
