hey all!
I've build a site on .info domain on a competitive niche (health/fitness) and for my main - most competitive keyword (5.6mil broad results) and after a week my site is on 17th page (176 place to be exact). I've implement well known methods (bookmarks, articles etc).so far have only 6 articles on my site (100% unique, each one targeting diff keyword)

so, how do do You think, is it a good score?

it will bring you a good motivation if you able to see the result now.
But yet it too early to happy with it, what most concern for new website is check on the Google PR. After few month, you may check once Google PR update. That most important to you.

It's still early on, but for a competitive niche like that, it has to feel good. Have a strategy, stick to it, and keep chipping away. Get it!

.info.... .com.... .net - they will all rank, it really doesn't matter which one you go for, the only benefit of .com over others like .info is that they look more attractive and people are potentially more likely to click on them.

I don't agree with that statement at all. I struggle to find .info domains that rank for competitive terms and the only benefit of a .com is that they look more attractive?

There is a reason some people only use .com, .net and .org.... I would never use a .info myself.

Looks a bit shady that site.....

In general though I do find it a lot harder to come across .info domains in the top search rankings. I know for every niche I'm in there are no .info's to be found anywhere and i'm not sure that the original poster will succeed in ranking his domain....

              Craig
They're only the exception because the myth that .infos don't rank as well has been perpetuated for years ... mostly by internet marketers, so there's probably a 100/1 .com/.info ratio for every niche (probably far greater).

I can tell anyone for a fact that any .info will rank every bit as well as a .com. It matter not in the least.

I had stopped looking competition from the search numbers sometimes ago. I measure my competition by looking "who" are on top 10. How old their domains are? How many backlinks they have? Are the backlinks in good quality? Are they specifically aftering the same keyword phrase as me? Just basic questions. The answer of that question, will give me the slightest idea of your .info odds to get to page one.

Search numbers give me the possibility of revenue stream, not the competition.
But, if so far your site moving forward, just keep doing what you've been doing so far. I cheer on you mate. Good luck

    That's cool Krist.

It goes to show that you can buy a cheap info domain for $1 or a bit more and get results.

I hope you have more success with that keyword rich info domain.

Do you think people searching for stuff prefer or trust .com websites more than .info or .net websites? That's the only thing bothering me.

Please let me have your views?

I don't think the average person searching for something pays any attention at all to the TLD - it's only business people and marketers that notice IMO

I have .com .net .co.uk and .info domains, once the site has a bit of age behind it 2-3 years it doesn't seem to make any difference at all.

Thanks NicSennen and others for your views.

Your right, for an average it doesn't matter whether it is an .info or .com domain. I was looking at it from an IM view.

I might start using .info from now on, especially if it relates to IM.

The other thing I recently saw was a friend of mine using .net to advertise his watch repairs shop in the UK. I totally disagreed with him and suggested getting a co.uk as his customers would mainly be from the UK. So I think we should think about your audiences and the business model when deciding which ones to purchase.

  • micro sites with little contents are not good for SEO, however it seems to get in a good place in Google suddenly it'll fall, because nowadays Google is giving first preference to the sites which is have good look (I mean the designing) and having inner pages, and have huge number of contents. My point is to design your website by adding plugins and some more features, It'll be helpful you to reach your goal.

Good luck but you are fighting an uphill battle. With a niche that competitive I would have gone for a brandable .com name rather than a keyword rich .info. Google says all the TLD's are treated the same but I think they put a bit of a spam flag on .info's

Nice work mate and I look forward to following your progress

Try not to spend to much time (right now) on tracking your rankings and just set up a solid back linking strategy and keep at it

      Consistency is the key here.

Even in the first year Google can bounce your site around a bit - seems to level out after that

Don't worry about all the people who say you can't rank .infos at #1

There have been plenty of threads on proving once and for all that .info with the right backlinking campaign can just as easily rank #1 for your key words

Just keep building, keep looking forward and we will see you at #1!

I now I can not find it in google
Last time I saw in pages 5
I still build backlinks in it. But it hard to get one.

Some would argue that .info domains are harder to rank than others, but some would say as long as you focus on high PR and authority sites you will rank, but since the niche is competive it may take some time to see results

It doesn't matter what domain name you choose as far as the .com .org .info They all have the ability to be "Indexed" the same. That's not to say some searchers don't prefer a .com over a .org or .info and I have no proof of that. I personally don't care when I'm searching for something.

I suggest looking at the source code of the sites listed at the top ten for your main key words and keyphrases on google. See what their meta descriptions are made of and compare them to yours. Don't change anything on your meta description! Leave it alone for a month or so. Your site is too new to mess with the SEO too much. Just observe the comp and take notes. In a month or so, start tweaking if you need to. In the mean-time start building backlinks.

Join MyGuestBlog and start guest posting on blogs all over the net in your niche and build backlinks that way. It's easy and free and you can even get guest posters for your blog.

Anyone who thinks a .info won't rank well is completely naive and clueless. I thought this for the last year.. .built all my autoblogs on .com. My little bro didn't have the money to start out, went for a .info and it started working. He stuck with them. He now has only 33 websites.. every one a .info and he cleared over $3000 in adsense last month, in only his 8th month since starting up his first site.

I've since bought nothing but .info domains. I could post about a thousand phrases right here and now that are ranking for top 3 results on the first page of our .infos. They work every bit as well as .com. I love them because so many good domain names are available. Google don't care.

Nice! I love the $0.99 .info domains for adsense sites, they get the job done. So far great job, just keep doing what you're doing and once you get stuck in the same positions for a few weeks, consider integrating a new linking method to improve the rankings. Of course, slowly so it's 'humanized' in Google eye and you'll be fine.

    Good job, keep it up!

Results looks good, but keep in mind always THE EXACT SEARCH for your keywords. I never build a site based on broad keywords, always exact match, because I have found that many times broad keywords doesn't mean exact keywords match. Here is my real life example.

    keyword broad match = 110,000
    keyword exact match = 182

I was so happy that my site was in second page already but the weird thing I didn't have visitors. Well, I rechecked again and I found out that all my efforts where in vain. My humble advise is better for you always follow "exact matching" in your keywords, no matter what software you are using.

I still don't see the point on this type of posts...
new domain name... in a competitive industry....
    what's the objective here?
To show us that link building increase the ranking of a site? or to show us that you will fail to get the site in top 3 based on lack of real authority, age and enough link juice.

Sorry to sound like a jerk... but all the posts usually are like:

    Yeah! You rock! keep going!

    Keep going where?
link building from article marketing, social bookmarks to realize you need authority (real authority) to push a site to top 5... top 3...

    anyway, my 2 cents...

Why not creating a blog and post your articles there? There's a Linked list gadget there where you can put your backlinks so that they will be indexed as soon as you have published your posts. That trick is simple yet powerful if we talk about indexing.
      Hope this helps.

If you are looking for organic search traffic, rather than running an email campaign where you simply need a landing page like most people here, developing on anything other than .com seems very inefficient as a good chunk of any return traffic or referrals will end up at the dot com website after typing in the .com domain name. It will take incredible effort to move to page 1 in all cases, why make that investment in time and money on a domain facing such a big disadvantage.

Did it take more back links than normal to get to page 1 with your .info ?

Well, as with anything, it's going to vary with your competition. If competition is weak, the less backlinks you'll need, and vice-versa. Some of the sites required a little more push due to more competition, while others were the polar opposite.

I've been working really hard on proper on-page SEO, and I truly think that is what has helped me obtain solid rankings. These .info sites have been sitting on page 1 now for a few months with very little movement. Once I learned how to use proper on-page SEO tactics, I've been witnessing some stellar rankings. Once I put some quality, diversified backlinks to them, that's when it starts driving it's way to the top.

Right now, I'm working on going back through some of my old sites that weren't optimized fully and reworking them to help start those make their way up as well. The key is to mesh your on-page SEO so that it works for the SE's, but also is readable and of quality. That's how I've managed to get good rankings, lower my bounce rate and increase my average visitor time.

another update, 12 hour ago my article site was on 9th page, main site - 34th (for main keyword)
    now:
my main site is at 15th page, my article - no results till 35 page

for me it's good because for this keyword i want to rank my page, not an article (which is on page 17th from 1.1mil results in article keyword)

looks like Google is researching my site more and just the results are more relevant now

    Awesome dude!

It goes to show that .info domains are really no less valuable than .com - and I would rather have an exact match .info domain than a .com that sounds "catchy" but has no keywords in it!

Keep up the good work and you will be on page 1 in no time.

A really good tool that you can get for free is Market Samurai. It will tell you exactly what you need to do to rank above the competition. I have started using it recently with some good success.

    update:
    Queries 202 Impressions 3000 Clicks 22

Not much traffic so far, my page is bouncing between 10th and 15th page for main keyword, and around 8th - 12th for some lower-competition keywords, I'm still working on content and backlinks, but probably need to boost some high-pr backlinks to get higher on results.

Its great to hear from newly created site. I just started mine also (2 weeks now) and though I don't think I'm ranking in a particular keyword, I already have a around 50+ visitors per day. And I just did what you did--social marketing and new posts.

One other thing I would recommend is blogging on CommenLuv blogs to get your sites some GOOD (with emphasis) quality links.
