Question regardling blog SEO (wordpress)

Do search engines rank individual posts or do they rank the page overall or maybe even both?

For example: you have an SEO blog and the first post regards the importance of SEO and targets the keyphrase 'is SEO important'. The second post is about utilising keywords in your domain name and targets 'keywords in a domain'. The third post is about utilising keywords in your title and targets 'keyword rich titles' etc.

In recommending your blog to searchers do search engines recognise individual posts or do they go by the overall page.

I always worry that by adding posts to my blog I will cause a scattering of focus on keywords making it harder to rank for the chosen keywords. Which is one of the reasons that I always add new posts/articles as individual pages (but I regularly tweak posts in order to send pings to search engines).

jewelenterprises, there's nothing to worry about! Google and most search engines easily differentiate a single post from the whole blog. Back in the time webmasters had similar worries regarding whether google will classify the main page as duplicate content.

I have many blogs and I can tell you google will rank individual posts very well, especially if you have many incoming links to them.

    Thanks soon.

I was mainly just curious I guess. In some ways I prefer to do extra posts as individual pages since I think it is slightly easier to optimize that way in the sense that a page can be set to have the title as part of the url. Therefore giving you the chance to use a keyword rich title and have it included in your url to help with ranking.
