Renting link on high PR index page, worth it?

This seems to be the holy grail of the backlink method at the moment.

Before I jump in and try those services which is not cheap and is renting links on high pr index page.

I wonder if any warriors actually have any experience with this?
I reverse engineer my competitor backlinks and apparently they are using this method and I do notice significant jump, like from #5 to #2, just underneath company site from highly competitive keyword.

I hate the renting or monthly payment, no payment = stop

What is alternative to this high PR index page? high PR blog commenting baclinks on high page page?

    The alternative is to create your own high PR network of sites.

    It takes time and is expensive though. You'll need to pay for hosting on different IP's, whois privacy, plus find and pay for all the domain names.
