Must have pages for SEO: Contact, Privacy Policy, etc

Contact, Privacy Policy, Terms Of Sale... I read where Google penalizes you if you don't have these pages? That seems silly. Why do they do that? And as for Terms of Sale (I assume TOS means that), if it's an info site, TOS would not apply.

Can you build your pages as you desire or do you need certain pages?

I agree if you are not selling anything on the site then you should not need them. I would assume that Google has a way to make sure that you are not penalized if you are not hosting a shopping cart on your site. As far as the privacy, I have hear that before. I think that it just gives your site a little more credibility as to protecting the information that you are gathering from your visitors. I could see why they would want that to be displayed.

Adsense requires that you have a Privacy Policy with details about the Adsense program. I too have heard that a contact, privacy policy, and TOS is important. Typically I'll create those pages on just about every site that I'm looking to get ranked. The 10 minutes I spend on it can't hurt anything.

As for TOS page, I assume you have to name the page terms-of-sale.html or whatever, right? As for privacy, privacy-policy.html, I assume. Seems stupid to have to ask that but if there are rules, we should know the rules.

That's scary. Does that only apply to sites with shopping carts?

Ah, yes, Terms Of Use, that sounds more appropriate for a non-selling site.

This just seems weird in that I know of no "official" rules for SEO about this. Is it Terms Of Sale of Terms Of Use, etc.

I wonder where this rumor got started and if it's just a rumor. I mean, if a site does not collect info, why should it need a Privacy Policy.

I add Contact, Privacy Policy, Terms Of Use and Payment Policy (if relevant) to all my sites, once you worked through it, it takes only a few minutes to do the pages, so why not... rather be safe than sorry!

      Ah, yes.

Problem... if you need these as separate pages, not good if you have hosting program that only gives you five pages (for a small site). Could you combine all of this as a separate paragraph on one page or do you, literally, think that Google searchs for "contact" to be part of the url? Must you have to be separate pages?

And I'd still like to know if this is a rumor or this ever been published somewhere as a real deal? If anyone knows, advise, please.

I only have privacy as google adsense TOS requires that.

The others, I have never done. Don't care, no need.

If you use adwords, you need those. Maybe.

I see no reason to have a privacy policy if you are not
harvesting emails. Just selling something is not the same.
Any reliable payment processor will have contact built in.

Just a side note, I think google is covering the privacy
policy with adsense on their own now. That's what the
"ad choices" button does. I notice this button on other
ad servers as well. They all seem to be using the same
    internet ad serving guidelines.
