How To Avoid Duplicate Content On An E-Commerce Site?

I am building an e-commerce site and i have over a fifty products that have virtually the same product descriptions. Some of it is unique for each one, but the materials and what they are made of are the same.
Ex- I am selling stuffed animals which are all made out of the same material and same size but and do the exact same thing. And say the individual products were a bear stuffed animal, a bird stuffed animal, a lizard stuffed animal, etc. You can't change the their materials for each individual product.

Is this duplicate content? How do you get around this?
Please someone help me

  • Also, a competitor has EXACTLY copied and pasted our manufacturer's product descriptions to a t and they are ranking for many of the keywords we want to rank for. So google obviously isn't penalizing them
  • Anyone doing e commerce sites these days? lol

    • There's no duplicate content penalty, really, especially for that.
I would imagine any site like yours has similar descriptions.

I've even copied amazon's for my pages. Slightly different
than what you are doing, but for similar items, amazon has
no choice but to use the same description across the board,
or at least a good deal of it.

They sell DVD, DVD/Blu ray combo, Blu Ray, Special Package, etc.
of popular movies. They all have the same description, mostly,
except for what's in the bundle.

I think the top 2 games on amazon are LA Noire. But for
a different system. Game description is all the same.

  • Well i am doing ecommerce for computer software and hardware. However i copy and paste the description BUT i also changed with my own words.. don't need to copy exact same thing..
  • Just create unique ~300 word product descriptions for each product and make sure that multiple urls don't lead to the same page, fix these up with canonical tags.

Also add content to all of your category pages.
