Penalty in SERPS - PLEASE Help Me.

The following penalty has happened to two of my sites, and its sad because they are truly quality sites:
I've been creating super high-quality unique content rich sites on wordpress. They are to market my own products.
They contain about 15-20 pages of 500-750 words. They are all made on wordpress with the Mystique theme.
Each page targets a different term, and all pages are accessible from each page.
I also have SEO Smart Links plugin going, meaning that when pages main term is mentioned on any page, it hyperlinks a few of them.
So on-site, the site is SUPER optimized.. perhaps slightly over optimized, but I do not think Google penalizes for this.
I've found that these style of sites are Google candy, and rank very very well.
BUT, I've been having some major issues.
This is what happens:
The sites will rank near the top ten, but then one day get majorly penalized. But after some careful observation, Iv'e seen that what happens is the home page actually gets penalized, and, after the penalty, my site ranks deep in the SERPS for a sub page.
So imagine I have a site on dog food, and its called
AlsGreatDogFood.com
And the site has tons of articles on it that support the theme of dog food.. And I build most of my links to AlsGreatDogFood.com directly.
Well, it all ranks great for a while, and then one day it falls to #200 in the SERPS.
ANd when it does, it doesn't rank AlsGreatDogFood.com, it ranks a page, such as:
AlsGreatDogFood.com/organicdogfood.html
??????
So its almost like my main domain gets penalized?
Or are my pages competing against each other?
What are your thoughts?
PS -- Another thing I've done that was likely a mistake: when I first created my sites, I submitted the SAME articles from the sites to ezinearticles and linked back to my site. So perhaps Ezinearticles.com is getting credit for the articles and my sites are looking like dupe content?
But I am not sure if this is the case because I've recently put fresh content on the sites and I've seen no ranking changes.
