Something I just learned about PR and Obtaining Higher PR

Alright, we all know that backlinks shoot us to the desired position in the rankings, but how do they play into PR?

I've just done a case study using two of my sites and built a very small amount of backlinks to one site (site A) using only manual link building techniques with quality backlinks, and then built more than 10 times that many backlinks to a second site (site B).

Here's the kicker:

Site A and site B both received the same number of quality backlinks, as I did the same manual work for each of them up front. After the manual work, though, I took site B and put backlinks to it, like there was no tomorrow, through any means I could think of (forum profiles, blog comments, etc.). Site A now currently is sitting with a PR of 2 and site B is sitting with a PR of 0.

Site A: PR 2 (~30 backlinks) Rank:#1 for its keyword (EMD)
Site B: PR 0 (300+ backlinks) Rank:#3 for its keyword (EMD)

Why? (Keep in mind neither of these sites are linking out to any other sites)

The Google PR system actually gets dispersed and "spread out" based on the number of incoming links to your site. Higher PR is achieved faster through manual link building techniques, rather than spamming the web. This is a smart move on Google's part to show true value in a page, rather than give value for a high number of links.

Bottom line, I now build mainly high quality backlinks and use only high quality blog networks to do so. I no longer try to boost up my links to my site with small "blasts," as I've found PR to be something very important. So, for all you IMers out there trying to increase PR, maybe it takes less work than you think?
