Google Voice Search

Google has just launched a new feature for Google Search called Voice Search. It will work with any PC that uses The Google Chrome browser and has microphone attached to their computer. Has anyone had a chance to try it out yet?

It looks like it will have a serious impact on the use of longer phrase search queries, since it is easy to say a longer phrase than type it. What is you opinion on this new feature? How will it effect the average length of keywords used in searches?

  • Since 0/2000+ computer users I know don't use a mic and wouldn't search google with it if they had one, I can't imagine this being a game changer in any way.

    • Hi guitarjosh,

There is always a percentage of the population that refuses to adapt, and some technologies flop. Perhaps this one will never catch on, but I get the feeling that some people will adapt to this technology, and since it has Web Accessibility implications, I doubt it will ever go away. I can remember wondering who would bother typing a text message on a phone when they could just make a phone call.

Here are some of the things Google claims:

      Useful For
      • Hard-to-spell searches
      • Makes searching words you're not sure how to spell quicker and easier.
      • Longer searches
      • Search long queries, even really, really long queries, just by talking.
      • Searches that are just more fun to search out loud
      • Now you can ask your computer anything.
      • Searching without typing
      • Use it in the kitchen, in the garage or anytime your hands might be full.
  • I receive this message
  • Heh, I have had this on my Symbian-based mobile phone for a year or so. All I can say is I feel a complete idiot walking down the street saying, "hot naked chicks" and "knitted faucet warmers" into my phone! So I don't use it much...

    • Hi FaviooxD,

Sorry, I saw an ad on Google's website for this new feature and I posted the display URL from the AdWords Ad. It appears that Google's advertised URL isn't live yet. Here's one that works:

      Hi seoforu,

That link you posted is for the mobile voice search, My post was about the desktop voice search which currently is only for the US market and is built in to standard search for anyone using the Chrome browser.

Google's advertised URL isn't live yet. Here's one that is currently working:

  • I could certainly see this being of great use to those with limited mobility, sight problems, or dyslexia.

My boyfriend (who doesn't come under any of the above categories) thougt it was amazing when he got it on his android mobile phone. He used it for about 5 searches then decided it was more trouble than it was worth.

If you are searching a long tail phrase then I could see it being worthwhile as well. But I can type faster than I can speak, so...
  • This function depends on quality of microphone, there were some problems with Acer lap-tops, i saw that in youtube, so for simple searches it might be useful, but not for long keywords.
  • i dont think it going to be a game changer at all! its a good technology but most people wont use it in their work or study place. after all who wants other people to know what we are searching for. this technology has been around in some cell phones and some German car manufactures had this technology for ages (e.g Mercedes Benz s class). on the other hand it could be fun to use at home or for kids! i wonder how reliable it can be since its not that impressive in cell phones and cars yet! well, i am a geeky guy, so i guess i am one of those who might find a good use of it , for the hack of it
