How many tiers is best for the link pyramid?

Hello.
I've lately gotten tired of the game I play with normal backlinking where I go up or down and it's always a gamble, so I did some research and found out about link pyramids.
Of course, I seem to be really late to the game and this is seemingly how I always should've backlinked my internet properties.
but the main question I've wanted to ask is that I've found 2 services that will both do these for me and give a nice increase in the SERPs, but I wanted to as once and for all which is the better structure.
Should I buy the 3 tiered pyramid or the 2 tiered one? I've been researching for a while but I haven't been able to find an answer.
