My site is going down in search rankings!

My 4 week old site crawled up to first page on Google search rankings and suddenly 2 days ago it started to fall hard in the rankings and now it's all the way down on second page..

The first weeks I bought some backlinking services and I got around 300 backlinks, after that I've bought several services, but none seem to give effect on the amount of backlinks. After a month it's still 300 backlinks and keep rising with 1 or 2 every now and then.

It's so frustrating. Have anyone experienced this before, will it take a turn and rise again?

Does anyone know of a good / expensive backlink service that I could use?

Google does this.. Some call it the google dance. You go up and down when your building links. They key is to keep building links to it and it'll stay on page one, but you have to keep working. And backlink counts are not always accurate, don't worry about that.

I agree. I have the believe to focus only on the things I have control over... I don't have control on if today google decides my site is #1 or #30.

I do have control on creating quality content, getting backlinks, optimizing for seo, etc.

If you fret over the Google Dance you'll just end up on your back.

I've never had that not happen, actually! New sites jump around in the search engines all of the time. I don't count on any sort of stability until at least four to six months in.

As others already mentioned, this is pretty normal. Just keep building backlinks, but mix it up with a different type of backlink than the ones you have already built. Variety helps.

Yep, expect this to happen for a new site.

A lot of new sites come out with a lot of great content, and the search engines love it - but if the amount of content/quality drops off then you will slowly go down until you reach an equilibrium point. It depends a lot on the other competitors in your keyword niche as well, how often they update, how many newcomers show up every week, etc.

Also, I'm generally VERY wary of the efficacy/long term value of any linking service. I've got some good link building tools in my eBook if you want to give it a read (see sig) - I'd save my money and buy the basic tools to help you do your own link building, or outsource it to a full time individual who you know will do good work.

Sound advice. New sites today can go through all kinds of ups and downs. Frequently it will take 60 days or more to even begin to get any rankings. The advice above is solid - 4 to 6 months is a realistic time frame.

  • yes it happened with one of my second most recent article (this app review). It was ranking second and now it's ranking like 7th D: It's dropping day by day...so that means technically at some point it'll poof out of the face of google. lol just kidding

but on serious note, yes this happens a lot especially if your competitors are gaining links and you're being left behind (so I've been told).

i think the quality of the content on your site/regular updates (ie on page stuff) matters a lot. we hired the same link builder for two sites. one we put WAY more work in onpage and the other was less frequently updated. the less updated site dropped off page one the one we had a lot more relevant and updated content on is still on page one.

Thanks the reponses! Cleared some thought for me. I've been thinking the backlinks will just pop up one day and I will gain a large amount, but now I'm not sure anymore.

I've been building alot myself, bought 2 WSO servies and some Fiverr services. I think I've bought like 6 on Fiverr, but I only saw results on the first one and they came instant! Either it's taking some time before I see the rest or it's bad quality backlinks.. I know I must be careful not to hurt te SEO on my site.

Today my site has fallen 2 spots down again, it's almost on third page now.

Thanks, I got surprised myself it got up on first page so fast. So it's not normal unless your site is above normal good?

      Oggyoi

      Sounds like a Google dance.

Make sure that the backlinks you buy are good quality. I have bought some services before that have been utter rubbish !
Sounds like some Fiverr services there, I think most of think most of the Fiverr backlinks are crap, and some here on WSO! I've had two good experiences with Fiverr. One site got 700+ backlink and this one got 300.. but that's it. out of buying over 10 services, and you never know if the backlinks will hurt your SEO or not.

        Hi Vatndal

First things first, don't freak out! This happens all the time. My sites have done this when they are new. Even when I'm building quality links on a consistent basis the sites can still fall in the short term.

You need to be building backlinks consistently throught the first 2/4 months I have found. If you do this correctly then your sites WILL hit top rankings and most importantly STICK!

Quality over quantity remember and make sure you get a diversified link portfolio, as putting all your eggs in one basket in terms of backlinks is something that Google really doensn't like.

          Hi!

I'm all calm, it's just that I got the 300 first backlinks instant, and now it's been like 20 backlinks over the past 3 weeks.. but I know it take some time.

So how is the work on my backlinks going?

            That's important too, link velocity.

If you start off by building 300 instant links and then don't build many for a few weeks in the EARLY stages of a site, I have found that Google doesn't seem to like this. You're better off building a consistent amount of links each day for the first few weeks, and then up or lower it depending on how you're doing.

Your report is almost complete and you should receive it tomorrow

Yes, I've thought about that. I've been trying to build links but they seem to get crawled so slow that I don't know what to do. there should have been 2000+ instead of 300 by now, but I quess time will change that.

Ok, thanks! Can't wait. Depending on what you promote I believe looks like a good service.

Like the others have said and as I've learnt, its all part of the 'Google Dance', your sites new so I wouldnt worry too much yet.

One question though, did you build this site, get a load of content on there and then just stop adding to it?

One of my sites im currently working on was climbing steadily from 80-22 over the course of 3 weeks, and over that time I wasnt just backlinking, but posting new content/articles every few days. Then, I didnt do much new content for 2 weeks, and it started to drop.

Ive started putting new content on again and its picking up slowly again.

Just continue with your backlinking, get some new good quality content on there that has a decent keyword density of whatever keyword your trying to rank for and if you dont see any improvements in a couple of weeks or a month maybe you could look into a well reviewed WSO on here that could help you out.

When I launched it it was packed with good content, but I've been adding new content every 2nd or 3rd day - it's a blog / informative site. So it keeps getting new content every week.

As written above I will let time do the work for me.

Ok thanks, I'll have a look! Just one thing. If that's your site you really should clean it up, it so messy almost can't see the main content on the page because of all the commercials and frames etc. Just a hint.

I have a site that's about 6+ years old... Some days it's on the first page of google (usually #5 or 6) and other days it's at #80 or gone completely.

The thing about this site is it's an old site that I don't do anything with... It hasn't been updated in years, there is no new content added ever, no backlinks are added (not by me anyways). The site is basically dead...

BUT IT STILL DOES THE GOOGLE DANCE CONSTANTLY.

    Vatndal -

Just stick with it and follow the advice in this thread.

One thing you'll need to learn though is not to religiously pay attention to your rankings in Google. As the last guy said, even old websites see fluctuations! I've got a site thats 3 or 4 years old that constantly dances as well and then bounces back. Just keep going and building content and links.

Buying links is illegal for Google search engine. You have to read this:

Google and most other search engines use links to determine reputation. A site's ranking in Google search results is partly based on analysis of those sites that link to it. Link-based analysis is an extremely useful way of measuring a site's value, and has greatly improved the quality of web search. Both the quantity and, more importantly, the quality of links count towards this rating.

However, some SEOs and webmasters engage in the practice of buying and selling links that pass PageRank, disregarding the quality of the links, the sources, and the long-term impact it will have on their sites. Buying or selling links that pass PageRank is in violation of Google's Webmaster Guidelines and can negatively impact a site's ranking in search results.
That's from Google and you should have followed this rule. Otherwise, you get lower ranking in search engine results page.
