What kind of backlinks should I make for my website.

I know for the homepage google likes to see backlinks for a lot of different locations and many different IP's like:

profile links
blog comments
social bookmarks
press releases
article sites
edu/gov links (blog comments/profile links)
video links

What kind of backlinks does google like for my pages/posts? I am guessing social bookmarks/article sites/video links seem fine since those seem natural. But am I missing anything else? I have noticed using Market Samurai that the homepage always has the most links. Its never the page with the most unique links then the homepage on the top 10.

My question is does qoogle care if I use these above type of links only on my homepage or anywhere? And if you know other types of backlinks please post them. Thanks.

    • Yes, I would make a good layer of links from Web 2.0 websites first pointing to your money site, and also pointing to eachother.

Then I would take article directories and submit to the top ones by hand, also pointing to your money site, the web 2.0s and the other articles, mix it up.

Then I would take article marketing robot or some other article submission tool and fire off a few articles with links pointing to the Web 2.0s and hand submitted articles, NOT your money site!

That should keep you busy for now.

  • As search engines get better at discerning relevance, links to articles coming from pages discussing the same subject will further enhance the ranking of that article for the right KWs.
  • I don't think Google is that much picky about the exact type of links. It favors relevant links from trusted websites - that's it. So, if you can get any type of relevant links you mention - go ahead and build as much links as possible.

Anyway, it's great to know different types of backlinks to try out different sources - thanks for listing them.

BTW, is you run out of ideas about backlink sources, do backlink research of your competitors - you'll get very nice ideas, including the type of backlinks that works good for them.
  • You may get backlinks from bookmark, social sites, article dir. etc etc. However, the most important aspect that Google considers to be best is the relevance of your backlink, if you can get a homepage link from highly relevant website it will be more helpful, if you can get a homepage links from highly relevant website into the body of the page/content that will be more helpful then any other things mentioned.

Besides, if you get a backlink from .GOV .EDU or .ORG... Google will consider your website to be genuine, recognized, prominent and will elevate your rankings.

    • try and see where your competitors are getting their links, it always help to analyze the top 3 sites (and their incoming backlinks) for your target keyword.

  • Diversify is the answer here.

Make it look natural. So that would mean to get links from all the sources you can. Also get no-follow and do-follow links. It doesnt look natural to get only do-follow links.

    • What's a video link?
  • Yes dbadwal, but what about article sites?
  • I would assess where my competitors are getting their backlinks from, and how strong these backlinks are.

I would then begin building a mixed porfolio of link consistently for about 4-6 weeks and check where I was. If I saw and sort of movement I would keep building until I get where I wanted to be.
  • You should always build backlinks from domains that have a PR of 4 or greater (6+ is even better). Those backlinks should be dofollow and use your targeted keywords as anchor text. If the url that your backlink is placed on contains your specific keywords, that's even better. Check out my signature for more info.
  • Homepage must have more backlinks then internal pages because your site authority is then transferred to your internal pages. So if you homepage has a lot of backlinks then it will add value to every pages on your site, provided you have links to that page on your homepage.

For internal pages, you can use social bookmarking. Facebook likes and share will bring some traffic as well.

Try to comment on blogs which fetch feeds from your blog to show your latest post link along with comment.

    Thanks

  • Like others have said, forum profile links and blog commenting are all great ways to build links. Social links are becoming a very popular thing in SEO now with everything moving toward social proof. You need a good combination of all of these to see positive results.
