Do the link submitters accomplish anything?

This is my first post here, so I'm a newbie. I have a couple of local business sites I am trying to drive traffic to. I have Google place pages, several citations on the larger (merchantcircle, yelp, etc) sites, and I even get a small bit of traffic to my place pages. But I'm hoping to get the sites themselves on the first results page for a few towns. Done my SEO on the sites, local pages and citations.

I've recently used low-cost submitter software, and I'm wondering if using a submitter is worthwhile. The sites I submitted to are all PR6 to PR0 and they look kind of, well, cheesy. I'm thinking of getting a quality submitter (something under $100) and/or The Best Spinner to create article backlinks.

My question is, does creating backlinks on these cheesy sites accomplish anything towards increasing my page rank and, more importantly, in my position in the results?

YES, it helps a lot as long as the pages are legit - it's possible to fake pagerank but in general, backlinks from high PR sites are ideal... AS LONG as they are not nofollow links.

If you check the second link in my sig, the first item in my "40+ essential tools for web marketers" is blog commenting software that finds blogs by PR and nofollow status, also gives other data such as outbound links on the page... I love it, and it's under $100... check it out!

Backlinking is one of the most important things you can do to increase serch engine traffic, however you need to be careful about it. manual submissions are usually preferable.
