It's mainly done at the theme level although I think somebody mentioned that there was a plugin that would work too.

Can you define all little more with examples of what you termed "good content" and what "crappy content"? Thanks.

I have my own stats for that but I can't reveal my actual CTR numbers due to Google's restrictions. I'll just say that switch from a 'curb appeal' theme to a plain stripped down one (such as my boring memo theme) increased the CTR between 2 to 6 times, depending on the niche and site.

You don't want a search visitor to stick around anyway. You want them to exit quickly and the most logical choice other than the back button is an Adsense ad that matches what they were looking for in the first place. People who stick around generally aren't buyers. I did this article about it recently that explains it in more detail: Earn Online Cash with Ugly Websites

hbsjcd3,
I just take the dates out manually. Normally, depending upon the theme, I just have to remove the code from the single post, archive, and main index files. Do it once and it is done.

Hi Bob

The most important place to remove the code would be the main index file. It should be noted however that any changes to the main index are erased the minute you upgrade your wordpress version (which brings the dates back). That is the one aspect of wordpress that is annoying.

Having said this however... I'm not putting a downer on the software. Wordpress is fantastic for making professional looking blogs and sites. I agree with everyone else that it's the best blog software around. Just that one aspect can be annoying... I wish they could make it detect any changes and leave those in LOL.

Thanks Bob.

I already found a plugin that does the job too. In case anyone else wants it, you will find the plugin here:

Steve,

This will probably in your update, but how many articles are indexed on your site and how many articles do you have indexed with article directories?

Thanks

This is not correct. The main index file of WP is two lines and all it does is load the theme header. When you upgrade Wordpress, you aren't changing your theme so I'm not sure how you would arrive at this conclusion. FWIW, I make my own themes and do what Bob does. The dates are still in the db and in the rss feed but nowhere on my sites. That plugin doesn't appear to work on 2.7 and as far as I know only takes dates out of single post pages.

Thats not my experience. Sites like blog carnival are pretty good for getting your blog in front of people who are like minded with your blog's content and then turning around and getting your blog onto the blog of other same oriented sites, and the right person on a social site plugging your blog can be a massive influx of traffic

Unfortunately that "massive influx of traffic" aren't buyers but social visitors and don't convert well, especially for Adsense.

Hi Steve,

I've been following you for a while now and you have given me the inspiration to finally write and submit articles. I have a few blogs that have been going for the past few months and my health blog is starting to take off. Anyway, after writing one post I went to a certain related high traffic blog and found a post related to what I had written on my own blog. I made a good long comment talking about my own experience (about 3 or 4 paragraphs).

When I woke up the next morning I made made about $5.00 in Adsense from that post. I know it was from that post because I usually make less than $1.00 per day from that blog.
Anyway, for the next 2 weeks I had to work on a different project I was hired for so I left my blog alone.

When I got back and checked my Adsense stats I was shocked to find I made almost $50 just from that blog post.

Just because I took the time to make a good and relevant comment on another blog, I was rewarded. So far I figure I made about $65 from that comment. I was not planning to make any money or traffic. I just found a blog post that I was knowledgeable about and put in my own 2 cents.

I'm doing this a little more often now. It's not easy to do as I'm also writing and distributing articles, blog posting on my other 6 or 7 blogs, re-writing a bunch of PLR articles on several niche sites I have, etc. etc.

What is your take on blog commenting, Steve?...and what strategies do you follow?

Joe

Trying to make money online can be as tough or as easy as you want it to be. I like easy. On my Internet Marketing site at http://www.FiveStarMarketing.net, there are 15 different topics with about 300 articles that try to make it easy.

Blog Carnivals are the "new" FFAs. Lots of traffic, extremely low conversion. Traffic comes from people that have blogs in your same niche, but are actually competitors, not potential customers.

Yes, blog commenting can be an effective strategy when done properly. Find related blogs indexed in google preferably with a good page rank. Make a good comment that is not at all spammy and add a url back to your site. To be really effective then you should use your target anchor text as your name although this is then bordering on spammy so you might not get approved by the blog owner. Also, find blogs which has nofollow turned off. I use comment Kahuna and also comment hut to do this for me although comment hut doesn't seem to work for me anymore.

Like i said, that hasn't been my experience. It seems that the people or blogs that are picking my blog up are blogs that are in one way or another directly connected to or sometimes even also involved in, the same niche that I'm in. So the traffic isn't that much different than those i bring in by more direct marketing.

works for me anyway.

You need relevant content that can pass an algorithmic and human visual inspection. This doesn't mean though that it has to be top notch content. Save that for your flagship blog, EZA and/or your newsletters to your list.

If you want to convert your search traffic into money, especially for Adsense, you have to make ads enticing and your content less so. This means making your site dull and plain (aka ugly) except for the advertising. It means having a dull and boring writing style that is focused on keywords but not obviously so. Think about the most boring school textbook you ever read. It was informative but a chore to read.

Just to put this into context, Michael, could you confirm that you are earning at least $100 a day from Adsense? Because what you are saying goes against my experience too.

1. Take a brand new wordpress blog on a brand new domain
2. Locate a good adsense niche.
3. Conduct some keyword research for my blog theme, article titles and keywords.
4. Find a good WP theme
5. Create some good content for the blog.
6. Make sure my on site SEO is good.
7. Promote my blog properly.
8. Maintain the blog, testing and tracking.

My goal is to have this blog earning at least $100 per day in adsense income in just 3 months time! I want to do this to prove that you do not have to spew up hundreds of rubbish "Made For Adsense" (MFA) sites to make money from adsense. I want to prove that you can do it with a potent mix of:

1. Quality content
2. Some basic on site and off site SEO
3. ACTION!

So, I predict by March 31st 2009 I will be earning $100 per day from this blog.

I will:

1. Endeavour to update this thread every few days with what I am doing or have done to the blog.
2. Any income reports.
3. Use screenshots where possible for proof.
4. Show the niche I am targeting.
5. Answer any questions people may have.
6. Be investing a small amount of money in content creation.

I will not:

1. Reveal the domain name. (It could seriously skew the results if I did)
2. Lie about the income, if the blog flops I will show you (I am confident it won't however).
3. Desert this thread half way through.

My next post will demonstrate the process I go through to find a good niche.
I have subscribed to this one. Go for it. I like your style. I have a boat load of sites up, and adsense takes some time to kick in.

Hey, if it works for you, then...rinse and repeat. I've tried blog carnivals in 5 different niches, and al I get is a 400-500% jump in monthly traffic, with a .0000056% conversion rate.

I didn't use blog carnivals for adsense, used it as an affiliate....maybe, you are using for adsense? My guess, is yes.

And Google will ban you quite arbitrarily. I had an email from Google Adsense objecting to some specific content on my main blog so I pulled it. I also went through and took down some other stuff that might have offended their sensitive tastes as well. All to no avail - a week later they banned the blog anyway. Writing to them is useless - they're GOD don't you know. Shame really. I was pulling $2-300 a month of that blog. Anyway, at least now I can post whatever the hell I want.

The dates are still in the db and in the rss feed but nowhere on my sites. That plugin doesn't appear to work on 2.7 and as far as I know only takes dates out of single post pages.
So does index.php not get changed when you upgrade to a new version? Up to now the only templates I've changed are header.php, style.css and footer.php and whenever I upgrade my version the changes I made to these files are reversed and I have to go back in and redo them . The only change that stays is the change to the header color.

Index.php is more than two lines on mine... and because I don't know php I'm not sure what code to remove... apart from the fact that it obviously wouldn't be the <?php get_header(); ?> or any similar code for sidebars and footers.

Would it be this code that sets the date in <?php the_time('F jS, Y') ?>

Hi Julia,

It sounds as though you might be wiping out the wp-content directory containing your themes when you do your upgrade. This isn't really necessary.

The short index.php file I'm referring to lives in the root directory of your WP installation. I think you are referring to the index.php file in your theme directory?

I don't want to derail this thread, but I'd be happy to help with any WP questions/issues you have if you want to PM me.

I'm eager to see how you will do by the end of the third month. This area of advertising (Adsense and Adwords) is still new to me, I must educate my self on how it should be done properly. Anybody know the best method of learning the "how to's' of Google advertising? Should I get Perry Marshall's guide?

I can use this as a quasi-case study.

Bro, if you need to know about adsense grab Steve's Cash Cow guide. Best money you will spend and if you've read through this thread there's no fluff in what Steve talks about, just solid advice.

Steve,
If you don't reach your target by the target date, will you still give updates until the target is reached?

Great post. I am following you on your blog also. I hope you continue posting till you reach $100 a day. You have inspired me to start a quality blog as opposed to auto blogs.

Thanks

I am confused about the niche selection at the beginning. As you are quoting CPC in $, are your search results based on whole web search?

Put simply, I would like to know if a keyword phrase with a £4 avg. CPC and 5k monthly searches, with 25k UK ONLY exact matches would be worth pursuing as my first foray into Adsense marketing?

Many thanks if anyone has an opinion on this.

I have been following this thread for about a month. Since we are 21 pages into this, I can not recall if anyone has talked about when to actually put your AdSense on your site. Here are a few options...

1. Immediately put AdSense on the "birth" of the blog or website.

2. Wait to when the site is index by Google.

3. Wait until you are in the first page in Google for the keyword you are targeting.

4. Wait to you are number 1 to 3 position (On first page) of google for the keyword you are targeting.

I am sure there are other scenarios I have overlooked. Can someone please offer an suggestions?

Heya Fran

Basically Steve just waited until he had around 100 visitors per day to the blog. I think it was about 3-4 weeks in.

It depends on the niche. You may have a very profitable niche that only gets 50 visitors a day but the clicks are worth $5 or more so there are no hard and fast numbers.

My suggestion is to wait until you're seeing consistent search engine traffic for the keywords and related long tails you're targeting. This might mean 10 visitors, 100 or even 1000. But if the traffic is showing up every day looking for info from you it's probably time to put Adsense on the site.

The most common mistake is placing it too early. Wait for the site to get indexed and moving up in Google based on your external SEO (aka link building) then put Adsense on it.

Wow, I just came across this thread now. Does anyone know the final outcome of Steve's ad sense experiment. I am curious to find out what happened in the end. I have browsed though many pages of this post but I cannot seem to find the end result anywhere.
