Steve, (Sorry if I missed it.... I did look...) What is your strategy re. using articles from ezine etc? What percentage of the content of your site is not unique? Do you add a paragraph before and after the article to add some unique content? (I did not see that though) Your site looks absolutely fab, and I love the adsense placement. Too bad we can't discuss CTR.... but this layout outperforms a lot of other layouts, yes? Best, Evita |

My strategy with using articles from Ezine and the other directories is quite simple. 1. The article has to add some value to my blog. 2. The article has to be good and interesting. I tend to start with a keyword phrase that I want to get some content about and then search the article directories until I find a suitable article. I do add a paragraph to the start and end and also add a new title but I always make sure the original title is included as a header in the article so I am not breaking any rules. The reason for the new title is so I can ensure my keyword phrase is in the title for SEO purposes. I do sometimes add articles without doing the steps above though (being lazy I guess) and I have to say I have less luck with getting ranked highly. So it is certainly worth taking the extra steps when using articles from directories. The layout of the blog and in particular Adsense is the result of me testing various placements, colour schemes, adsense types etc. I demonstrate the technique I use in my free guide to Adsense placement avauilable on my 100 bucks challenge blog. Yes, it does have a good CTR!

I am seriously going to work on this, and as for starters, I won't set up an amount for a goal. Any amount is worth it.

OK, so you say you don't rank as well when not following those steps. Does that mean you do not use a new title and are looking to rank with the article title? Or, you omit adding a few paragraphs pre/post article and that is what causes you to rank less well for the title you added yourself? Don't mean to nit pick, just want to be clear And, what percentage of the content on your blog, more or less, is from article directories? Thanks for being such a role model for so many!! (And answering all our questions!) Evita | |

Hi Pixel, hosting will be required and I can help with some reccomendations if the member does not have hosting already. As for tools, I am building this course so that people can do this using as many free resources as possible. Of course there are always payed tools that might make certain jobs easier but the emphasis will be on using free resources. Any other costs apart from the course itself will be domain costs and thats pretty much it.. It's all moving in the right direction, I will post on my blog when things are almost ready.

I have a post lined up on my 100 bucks challenge blog with an update to be posted tomorrow. In short I had a day last week where it went over $70 for the day but since then my blog has been in the hands of a google dance and has decreased again. Full report tomorrow. |

Hey Steve Regarding your site falling down the listings, this is what I was asking about a few days ago . Unfortunately I don't think it has got to do with google dance . There is a lot of talk floating around the net with regards Algorithin changes google have implemented the last 2 weeks or so to sites that are perceived as using bad practises to gain backlinks. There are many other people complaining of the same thing as you, such as dropping far down the serps for their main keywords etc. I sincerely do hope that you site does shoot back up again as you have given many people, including myself a lot of inspiration with this wonderful thread. |

I appreciate your concern and I am pleased you found this thread inspirational. Thankfully my site has bounced back onto page 1 of Google again for my target keyword at least in the UK anyway. A few points though.. 1. Bad practices with backlinking is not what this thread is about at all. I am trying to demonstrate the right way to get backlinks from good neighbourhoods. This is nothing new by the way, it has been this way with Google for a long time. 2. My concern was specifically about using automated ranking checking software and whether Google can penalise a site for using one. I personally will not be using any software again to check rankings. 3. It is very easy to suffer with Googlenoia and I suffered with it myself earlier this week after seeing the ranking drop. I gave myself a good kick up the arse though and pulled myself together again.

Hi exit301, I'm sure Steve will recommend a few image sites shortly. In the meantime you can check these out: STOCKXPERT - Royalty free stock photography community Stock Photography: Search Royalty Free Images & Photos Royalty Free Photos, Download Stock Photos and Images Stock Photos Royalty Free Downloads Prices are very affordable. There are also blog/site building programs such as Artisteer (Steve mentions this program on his blog) that come with stock pictures you can use. Cheers. |

Hi Steve, Believe it or not I've read through this entire thread plus all your challenge blog posts (don't ask how long that took!) and found it very inspirational and motivating. I had a question about the number of articles you ended up posting to your website, however. At various point you suggest you need to post 300 to 400 articles in order to reach your goal, but in a post in mid March you say you decided to only post 80 articles and focus on backlinks to these articles. I was wondering what was the total number of articles you have submitted to date to the blog (especially given you recent increase in daily amount coming into adsense) and whether you had any thoughts/evaluations about the math you used to start out (regarding average number of hits you hoped to receive per post, and the number of posts needed to reach your $100 goal). Thanks again for sharing your experience! |

Wow.. You surely win the endurance challenge! Yes, I was (am) going to be posting a lot more articles. I decided that I would concentrate initially on promoting a small selection of the better articles first though. My goal is to get those articles indexed in the top 10 of Google and then slowly keep posting more and more articles over time. This brings up an important point which I should have mentioned earlier. A lot of people think about website promotion as being about promoting the site itself which is a huge mistake. It's a subtle difference but the best way in my opinion is to think about promoting each article as it's own entity. The site as a whole will look after itself if you care for the internal pages.. When I have mentioned this in the past, people immediately start asking whether that means they need to start sending thousands of articles to ezine articles and other places for backlinks to each page. Not neccessarily, some articles will be easier to get into Google's top 10 than others, so it is very dependent on that. To answer your question, I have around 100 posts up there and I am actively promoting around 15 to 20 of them currently and letting the others float until I get to them. Although this process takes time and energy, it is very worth it in the long run.

Steve, I am wondering what software you use to keep track of your backlinks? I have access to AwStats in cPanel as well as Google Webmaster Tools. Strange thing is, they give me very different sets of backlinks! I am wondering if there is ONE software that is accurate and shows ALL the backlinks (including distinguishing between those which are no-follow)? Is it SEO Elite, or is there another? Thanks for your help!

The difference between awstats and analytics is that they both operate differently. I wrote an explanation of why there are differences between the two over on my forum here... 100 Bucks Challenge • View topic - Loy - Gay Cruises To keep track of backlinks, SEO elite is great but I love using firefox with SEOquake addon. It really is a great little addon.
