The way I like to think of it is like this, you have a topic that becomes your main theme. You then look at that theme and all it's component parts become it's subthemes. The mistake a lot of people tend to make is thinking that the sub themes have to contain the main keyword of the main theme because their keyword tool told them so. Although they certainly can do, it is more important that they actually have a sub relationship with the main theme.

Category choice is also very dependent on what your point of the site is going to be. As Adsense sites tend to be just about providing information, then we may not be so concerned with products and that would have a bearing on category choice as well.

I will demonstrate this with an example using cellulite. Of the top of my head the sub themes for the cellulite for a purely adsense site might be:

* Liposuction
* Cellulite Diagnosis
* Cellulite Treatment
* Massage Therapies
* Cellulite Prevention

This is just of the top of my head, I haven't actually researched this topic but I hope you get the idea. They are all component parts that make up the topic of Cellulite. These categories can then be broken down still further into articles.

The main point is, is that google loves themed sites and also sites that show some authority on their subject. Good themeing of your sites, has a double bonus of demonstrating your knowledge plus providing good themed navigation.

Do I pick the 7 top keywords that I am going for and use those as the categories? I am pretty lucky as my niche is quite nicely set out that way.

Hi Steve,

I think I remember that on your blog you said you weren't going to add AdSense until you had 100 unique visitors a day. Have you reached that target already? If you have, that is really fantastic. When are the next set of stats due to be published?

Hi Nick,

No I am not at 100 a day yet but I feel I need to move this on a bit so that people following don't get bored. Yesterday was 77 visits and today I think I will beat that.. A lot of those however are repeat visitors and bots plus myself. I think my unique visitors from google are around 25 a day now. I have a long, long way to go but I hope that once all the promotion I have been doing over the past few days kicks in, I should see that start to rise a lot.

It's a bit like pushing a big heavy ball up a mountain but I gotta keep pushing. I will update the blog later this evening.

Makes perfect sense. Actually this works really nicely with the theme of my blog.

I am sure that other people are following too. Just a cool tip that works for me (I hope it will work for you too!)

If you are adding 2-3 posts a day and you want them to be indexed by search engines ASAP and you DONT have any fancy programs to bookmark your posts, submit it to Digg.com, reddit.com, furl.net and stumbleupon.com.

I do this and my posts usually get picked up by Google within a couple of hours.

I am not saying this will work for everyone, but it sure works for me.
Thanks Steve.

I admire your persistence, Steve, but your estimates seem inflated. I doubt that you could get 30-60 uniques per day from one article/post. Think of it:

A 5000 exact match keyword will bring you -- at best -- 66 uniques per day. How do I calculate this? 5000 / 30 days * 40%. 40% is the number of people who'd actually click on your Google entry if you were #1. If you're less than #1, you'll be getting way less (1-5%).

Now, that estimate involved a 5000 exact match keyword. Good luck finding 50-100 such keywords in your niche. And even if you do, ranking 50 articles #1 on what are bound to be very competitive keywords will take A LOT of effort (way more than 3 months).

It's far more realistic to assume your average article and it's keyword will generate 500 monthly searches or less. In that case, you'd be lucky to get 5 clicks per day per article assuming ALL #1 positions.

Of course I am not taking into account any long tails or broad match, which might double or triple that number. Still, even ranking #1 for ten 500 monthly search keywords is gonna be tough. Either way, I estimate you'll need somewhere between 300-1000 articles at that rate, and a large majority will need to be #1.

These estimates are based on my experience, which is limited to 4 months of this kind of work. Let me know if you think I'm way off the mark here.

FYI: the entire "European Cruise" sub-niche generates at total of ~30,000 searches per month (that includes every long-tail and broad match). That's 400 potential visitors per day IF you were dominating the ENTIRE niche with a #1 position. Now, how much of this niche can you expect to dominate? Granted, there are related niches like "European Vacations" which you could branch out into, but still, 1000 unique visitors per day seems like a tall order to fill.

And no, I don't want to rain on your parade. I'm just trying to be realistic and see if $100 per day is even theoretically possible here, assuming an infinite expenditure of your time and energy.

Change it up! Pitch me a get-rich-slow scheme.

You are right, I have underestimated the amount of articles I will need, I think I mentioned that a couple of times in other posts. I also know it will be a challenge to get to $100 a day by 31st March. I will also struggle to get that amount of searches if I were to stick with just European cruises.

However, there are many related topics that I am going to be writing about like shore excursions, hotels, car hire, sightseeing, cruise reviews and then there is the whole subject of river cruises around Europe's famous cities, there will be a forum, photo galleries, videos the list is quite wide and vast. The only problem is getting the content written and the work done and promoted but that is the challenge.

As to how many articles I will need, yes I am starting to think 300 or more will be more realistic. I don't know what I was thinking when I said 70 originally, (to much Xmas cheer I think). I will outsource some of the content writing, write some myself and re-use the better articles from the article directories. I will budget about $300 to get some of the content written.

My target is 2000 visitors at 10% CTR at $0.50 a click. I will get there and I appreciate how hard it looks but about 10 visitors a day per article is very achieveable. I am well aware some articles may be lucky to get 10 visits a month but several will get over 60+ visitors a day. It's all about the average over the blog at the end of the day.

Liquidgraph,

How can you possible know that "...it will take A LOT of effort (way more than 3 months)" if you have only been working in this industry for 4 months? How many sites have you built during this time?

I am not looking for an argument, just trying to understand your logic!

@ Nick: Because, I'm a web developer and have been at it since July. I've built 4+ sites. I'm no seasoned expert, but I just don't see how it's possible to get 2000 visitors per day unless your site catches major head traffic (not tail). And to catch head, you need to be on the first page for keywords like "European Cruises" etc.

It seems like in this business you're either earning scraps on very long tail, or you're raking in serious dough with the big boys on head. I'm still testing the waters right now with articles, etc., but my ultimate strategy is to get to #1 for a very high traffic keyword -- totally dominating my niche. And that's going to take 6-12 months at least. In the meantime, articles will do.

@Steve: Best of luck man. I will continue to watch your progress and am rooting for you all the way.

Aside: There's a lot of hype on this forum about affiliate marketing. Now, I've gotten some invaluable advice here (that's for sure), but is anyone here actually making $100/day (residual!) without resorting to marketing affiliate marketing? If affiliate marketing works so well, why the hell is everyone pitching affiliate marketing schemes? If they worked, you'd think folks would be making money off that alone -- not using pipedreams to plug their own products.

I know in my heart the one thing that really works, and that's building a world-class site that ranks #1, which people respect, and that provides an invaluable service. If everyone could publish 60 articles in 3 months and earn $100/day, the world would come to an end because no one would ever work again. It has to be a lot harder than that! It has to be so hard that 99.999% would not be able to do it, or be clever enough that 99.999% would not discover how to do it.

Change it up! Pitch me a get-rich-slow scheme.

Steve, the blog was easy to find. You may want to edit out the line after "all the best" on your about us page I can't wait to see your results and would hate for them to be skewed by users finding your site and then word getting out or the link getting posted in this thread.

BTW, great domain, I'm surprised it wasn't already taken!

Hi Steve,

I know you're busy but I was hoping you (and/or anyone else) would weigh in with any knowledge you have about adding video posts to adsense sites.

I found bgmacaw's post above about longer blog articles triggering better ads, and suddenly my dream of adsense-revenue .tv site have hit a big snare.

Thanks

It's not necessarily longer articles that will trigger better ads but more targeted ones. For example, a short article, 300 words or so, that's tightly focused on, for example, finding the best Ohio DUI lawyers, will generally display better paying ads than a 1500 word discourse on the history of DUI law in general. Longer articles can bring additional keywords into play for SEO purposes though, which can be helpful. You do need about 200 words though to keep the Adsense 'bot from getting confused and showing PSA's too often.

As for a video site, I've tried that and it didn't work so well with Adsense. You can overcome the short article problem by adding about 100 words of short description and by adding a few more words to the Description and Keywords meta tags. All-in-One SEO plugin is great for this. After experimenting for a while, I found monetizing with eBay, CJ and Amazon affiliate offers to be a better method for video sites.

Hi Tina,

1- Google can only read text so a page with only a video is as a good as blank. For on-site SEO purposes this is not good.

2- length of content in no way determines the quality/value of an ad placed on your site. It does however determine how targeted the ad will be which is very important as I won't click a knitting ad in a software site right?

My Solution:

YouTube only shows video but is great for content because of the comments and text/title of the video. Make use of the H1 title tag for the video title/keywords and beneath add 2 paragraphs of description (keyword filled of course)

Don't forget to add good meta tags and alt tags for the images as this will also help with ad targeting.

OK so you've now got good on site SEO. Make sure your off-site is up to par.

Louis

Hi Tina, I agree with what bgmacaw said plus I would suggest trying Adsense targeting by adding the following tags around a piece of text that contains the keywords you are targeting.
<!-- google_ad_section_start -->
TEXT GOES HERE...
<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Well, that's the whole point, isn't it? He's not just targeting the phrase "European cruise". He's targeting tons of different keyword phrases that are theme-related to "european cruise".

I have blogs that get 2000+ uniques every day, using pretty much the method that Steve is showing us here. They have 100-150 entries. One overarching theme, with the individual posts targeting subcategories with different keyword phrases from the theme or the site's main keyword phrase.

Many thanks to BG, Louis and Steve for straightening me out on video post SEO.

It's knowledge like this that can make the same content worth 2, 3, 4 or more times what it would be worth if not properly utilized.

Can anyone weigh in on the proven use of a solid keyword in the domain name? If I have 300 articles and I'm getting 2,000 uniques per day, how much help is my keyword domain name?

Hi Steve,

I was wandering if you were considering buying some high PR backlinks to boost your main keyword. I've had a good result with this although it was an older site.

There's a checklist that'll help you with questions like this Google Ranking Factors - SEO Checklist

Sites like seomoz and seobook have more upto date info but you'll need to pay.

I have a question for you Steve

When it comes to backlinks... is there any way to know whether a site is in a 'bad neighborhood' so that you can avoid linking there?

When I look for link partners I check the links that are currently linking to potential partners. I then take a look at a selection of them to see if they look spammy or the quality looks bad and then make a judgement.

I am sure other people have got some great techniques for this so it would be interesting to read their experiences.

No, I don't buy backlinks from places like textlinkads anymore, I have never seen any benefit from doing this as I think google are well aware of these sorts of practices now. If I do buy links, they will be through private transactions with other webmasters.

There is a lot of speculation about the importance of having the keyword in the domain name. My opinion is that it does make a difference to rankings in so much that I don't have to try quite so hard for high rankings for a keyword that appears in my domain name.

Steve,
What would be the difference between a regular wordpress blog and the one witha domain and use the wordpress blog themes? Would it make a lot of difference?
Thanks

If I undrstand the question correctly, a blog hosted on wordpress.com could be taken down at any time and a self hosted blog gives you more freedom and in my opinion better SEO benefits from having your own domain name.

Sorry SpudDS, you are right.. I have been mulling this over for a few days now but it looks like the challenge is going to have to change. It seems I have underestimated how popular this challenge has become and the upshot of this is that there is now an awful lot of curiosity about the actual Cruise blog. Unfortunately this now means that I can now no longer put my adsense code on the blog, it is to risky I hope you understand.

Here is what I will do though..

I will carry on building and promoting the blog as usual but the challenge is to get to 2000 visitors a day by 31st March 2009. This is what I predicted will get me to the $100 a day target. I am sure this will come as a disappointment to some and I apologise for that, like I say I have totally underestimated how many people would follow along. I will probably try monetizing at some point with some CPA offers or some affiliate stuff and I might even flog it at auction after the challenge is over.

I will also only update how things are going on the 100buckschallenge blog and will evolve that blog to cover many different ways of reaching $100 a day. I can still answer any questions people have about Adsense stuff on this thread but the challenge stuff will continue on the 100 Bucks Challenge blog.

Please don't think I have bottled out or anything, getting to 2000 visitors a day is still a huge task and theory is that would potentially equal $100 a day. Unfortunately events have meant my hand has been forced and I have no option.

Ah thats a shame Steve, I have really enjoyed this!

I have been following as you know.

Things starting to pick up quite nicely now. I have 31 posts on my blog. I am starting to rank for longer keyword phrases and the articles with my main keywords that I am gunning for are ranking from pages 2 - 5 (5 for the more competitive ones).

Over the last 3 days I have seen a nice little increase in traffic with about 20 uniques a day. Half of those came from search engines and the other half from Reddit strangely enough. Maybe reddit is the best SB site for my niche?

Anyway I have yet to have a sale, but I am really not worried about that now.

Plan: I will continue posting 3 articles a day for the next two weeks and then slow it down to one a day.

I'm not clear why you think you can't add Adsense to your blog any more.

I've received a couple of warnings from Adsense over the years and it seems to me that the really crucial concept is to provide 'added value' in your blog. In my humble opinion, that is exactly what you are doing with this blog. So why worry?

Nice thread.

For a number of reasons really, but mainly I have no control over where the visitors are coming from now and the untargeted quality of the traffic will mean my whole adsense account will get hit with smart pricing potentially. Would you really put your adsense account at risk?

You have it sussed out Pete, I wish you all the success. Although the challenge is not about reaching $100 a day anymore, nothing much has really changed, I still need to get to 2000 visitors a day with an adjustment for all the extra traffic I am getting as a direct result of this challenge.

Thanks Steve!

That's all good, I will still definitely follow this thread and keep you guys updated on my progress.

One thing I MUST do is write a better presales page for the product I am promoting. Unfortunately my copywriting skills suck, but I will work on it.

Aww that sucks. You should try using other ads just for the time being like Chitika, B5 media or something.

Nice, if you find a good one which can be used alongside adsense and figure out some good tips and tricks maybe you should write and market another ebook, something like "How i make $50 a day alongside adsense"

Of course, you could always wait until after the challenge is over and the interest has died down before adding adsense code... you've done the work by then so why not gather the rewards? I'm sure $100 a day in adsense earnings would be far better than whatever you would receive for flipping the blog.

Here's the answer Steve: Who Sees Ads plugin.

This plugin helps you control who sees ads on your blog. You can set it to show Adsense only to new search engine visitors and show it only once. You can substitute in other offers for social referral and returning visitors.

I also use the AdRotator plugin to swap around affiliate offers. It also works great.

I was actually looking at who sees ads, it may be the answer. I will test it out on some other domains first.
