What you need to do is set yourself an income goal and then take it from there. If your goal is to earn $10 a day initially, that means you have to do is work out roughly how many articles you would need plus how much traffic you would need based on click through rate and cost per click for the particular topic you are building a site on. At first you can only estimate it roughly and then when you start building, promoting and earning then you will get a much better idea. It is a very organic process.

1) Choose the URLs, the specific pages and even the ad blocks that their ads appear on. 2) Choose the country/state/city that their ads are displayed in. 3) Schedule their ads to be shown at specific days and times. 4) Choose their audience by gender, age, household income and other demographic criteria. 5) Pay on a CPC or CPM basis. And more. Advertisers can create many different types of report to help them analyse the effectiveness of their campaigns. The Placement Report, for example, will reveal the URLs that displayed their ads. If you just turn on the content network and hope for the best, you will lose a lot of money. It is not Google's job to manage your ad campaigns for you. Google's responsibility is to its shareholders, i.e. to make as much profit as possible. They provide you with all the tools and features you need to run successful campaigns; if you don't use them, that's your problem. And you don't even need an AdWords account to discover all this information. It's right there on the AdWords help pages. So, as an AdSense publisher, it makes sense (no pun intended) to read up on AdWords so that you understand the system that you hope will make your websites and blogs profitable for you.

Yes, you can do all this things. But I don´t know of a tool to automize the proces. People with huge campaigns with hundreds or even thousands of keywords cannot do this easily. Therefore I assume most people are not doing everything that´s possible. Quite often I see ads on the search pages where the link or the landingpage is not working. Sometimes for days and the advertisers do not seem to know about this. I can´t believe conversion is the main reason for low paying ads. There are new ads nearly every day. People start new campaigns every day. Lots of these campaigns will not be profitable. Before they even know if my site converts for them, their campaign is already gone. Google of course is not responsible for my campaign. But in order to keep selling ads they need to have a good product. Of course I don´t know for sure how Google is doing these things. I just believe what seems logical to me. Your opinion also makes sense logically. There are probably people who check their conversions from each site. But the whole Adwords/Adsense system is a dynamic, rapidly changing thing. If I lose an advertiser I will have a new one in a second. Google gives me at least 90% of my traffic and Google gives me the Adsense ads that belong to this traffic. Google Media spiders visit my site every day. I don´t believe what makes sense is always technically possible or it is possible but too expensive. Google does not know if my site converts and I don´t believe advertisers checking their conversions can ruin my Adsense income. |

I'm following this closely. I've always been interested in Adsense. I have never ran a website with the only monetization strictly from adsense. I'm finding this very interesting.

I would firstly remove the adsense blue and change it to the same blue on your blog. I'd recommend one adsense block in the post, one paragraph below the headline with the reminder of the ad in the same black color as your font. In my limited experience with blogs, the blogs are no where near my static sites as far as CTR goes. I'm now in the process of getting de-blogged Evita

Just viewed your profile... Happy birthday ya old fart (you're exactly two weeks older than me <giggle>) In response to your post... did you by any chance manage to get hold of Steve's adsense placement guide? He had it in his signature file but it's not there now. If you didn't get it you could probably ask him for the link again. I read the report and it made sense. Even incorporated the 'heat maps' published by google.

Anyone else using the Adsense plugin Steve recommends here? Its called Max Banner Ads and is a total no-brainer to set up. I'm having a couple problems with it though that I'm hoping the developers can fix soon. Anyone else using it and having problems with ad placement? Plus I would like to NOT have it work on certain pages. Steve |

many distracting items on the blogs. I've tried to get rid of as much as possible from the sidebar, moving stuff down below the adsense ad so not to compete with it, but no matter what I try I don't seem to get it. The diff in CTR is quite large... so now I'm doing the opposite from everyone else, I'm transferring my blogs to static sites. But then again, maybe these numbers just apply to me? Evita

Hi, the first thing I need to point out is that you remove the related links header in your careers site as a matter of urgency. This could easily be seen as a gimmick by google, so I suggest you do that. By the looks of it, some sites would probably have better CTRs than others. Generally you need to experiment with different formats, colours and placements to find the "sweet spot". My adsense placement guide which you can for free through my list at 100 bucks challenge offers some good advice on how to do this.

You do have to work a bit smarter at getting the positioning right with a blog but I have no evidence at all that static sites get better CTR personally and there is no logical reason why this should be the case. |

Have you tried adding new zones and looking under "more options" which offers you the ability to display certain zones on some or all pages.

================================================== ==== 1) 468 X 60 ADSENSE UNIT APPEARING IN RIGHT SIDEBAR ON PAGES (NOT POSTS):================================================== ===== 1) The problem with a 468 X 60 Adsense banner sticking out of my right sidebar (when I only put a 160 X 600 Adsense unit there) was an issue with the theme and they fixed it. Actually, it was with two totally different themes. I will now have to go through all my sites and move a couple things around in page.php. 2) This was actually an issue with their excellent Maxblogpress Ninja Affiliate plugin (affiliate link cloaker) that I had previously purchased but they described a simple and easy work around to that. 3) This is kind of a bummer that they don't offer an "Exclude Certain Pages or Posts" option yet. They say they will and I hope it will be soon. The problem was that my 250 X 250 Adsense units I put at the top of every post (with text wrapped) were messing things up on some of my PAGES (like TOS, Contact, etc.). 4) They changed it so that the 250 X 250 Adsense Units are now merely centered ABOVE every post (instead of with text wrap). So Steve, I suspect that centering my 250 X 250 Adsense units, which now puts them ABOVE all my posts will seriously cut down on my CTR too. Don't you agree? What did you do with the Adsense units on your PAGES (not posts) since Max Banner Ads doesn't yet offer the ability to exclude certain pages and/or posts? Thanks Steve Steve

Thanks for pointing out these problems, I haven't actually found the need as yet to exclude individual pages from my ads so I can't really comment on this particular problem. I suppose, and this is of the top of my head, you could always create the pages as static html pages with the same look as your blog pages and remove the adsense code manually that way. I would imagine this would be a bit of a chore though if you had lots of pages.

Hi Mr. Steve Crooks, Very detailed info presented. Not a new information. Implementation and action is needed. I suggest put more detailed info on driving traffic to your site. If you reach your goal $100.00/day... are you planning to create an info-product about it? Please do so sir. Looking forward to see you succeed. Aries26 |

Steve! This just great! Thank you so much for the insight! And even if you "fail", you have already achieved a lot by teaching a newbie how things need to be done properly, without any hype or sales pitch! I will follow this thread until the very end, I'm sure! Best of luck! PS: But, the way you're going, its not a matter of luck, is it.... |

Yes, this is a good point. I guess you need to weigh up whether it is worth the effort if you have a lot of pages indexed.
