When you contact your freelance writer what instructions do you actually give them. Do you tell them you want a 600 word article with a keyword rich term like ‘European river cruise,’ or do you give them a title for an article e.g. ‘A European river cruise for all the family,’ or ‘Planning a European cruise for your 50th Wedding anniversary. And you edit it and make it keyword rich after you get it back. What are your general instructions to the author?
Kevin
When your keyword is "European river cruise" then you should just give this keyword to the writer and he will use that exact phrase in the title and once or twice in the article if he knows what he is doing. The writer will do the research for you, you don't have to bother with that.

I would say beware of the danger of over analyzing everything and don't get hung up on the minor technicalities though. The bigger picture is just build a good looking site with great content and get your adsense on there or whatever you are monetizing with and promote it. When you are able to afford the time to test the difference a few micro seconds make to page load times on your traffic then go for it but for now you should keep your eye on the big picture.

hi steve

what i was concerned about was not the loading time, but the loading sequence.....

how much weight does it carry if you load a lot of code before your content ?

already, you are loading:

site info
header
navigation
4 adsense modules (2 blocks, 1 link, 1 search)
categories
probably recent posts

in relation to all that, the text seems so faaaar away...(when u look at the source code)

Steve,

We just started hiring it out overseas. The two keys to making that work are very well done detailed instructions to start out with and monitoring of the first couple week's content.

The hardest thing isn't the quality or value, it is getting them to open up as writers so that they have a fun interesting style. Technically, I have had no complaints.

It has worked very well for us.

If you want to know more, let me know.

I don't know of any actual stipulations by google as to how quick a page should load but if you are signed up with webmaster tools you can see if the google spider runs into any timeout errors which would probably indicate whether your pages are loading quick enough.

I have never seen any penalties as far as I am aware from code loading before content. I guess if you had a whole heap of javascript and PHP code running that might inhibit load times or spider activity then that might be bad.

grumpyjacksa -

My way of doing it is to use the large rectangle block inline with the text or between the title and start of the post. You can see an example of this in my Boring Memo theme in my sig. I want that single, large, Adsense (or other ad widget) to be the star of the show on the page.

Remember that the more visually appealing (aka distracting) you make a blog the more likely it is for a visitor to ignore the Adsense blocks, especially if they're isolated in a sidebar. On the flipside, the more you put it in their face (while following Adsense rules of course) the more likely they are to click.

very true...

i learned the hard way that the more you offer to click on, the less chance you have of getting anything clicked on

so i developed this approach:

anything the visitor clicks on, must (a) lead further into the site

or (b) make you money

no gimmicks, no gadgets, no fancy widgets, no blogroll, no links page, nothing.

just navigation and monetization (and content)

If you write an article a day and submit them to social networks like digg and reddit $20 should not be hard to achieve as I am half way there and only post 3 times a month and only sometimes submit it to networks. Dont forget there are a lot of networks around.

If you want a link here please email me!

Damn Steve, what can I say? This thread is the inspiration I've been looking for. I have one site that is 1% complete and has no content and still brings me in $100 every few months but you have inspired me to get off my lazy butt and do something for myself instead of others haha.

For those asking about how to tell your freelancer to do content: Tell them what you want. If you don't will get generic blah blah blah articles with no personality. All it takes is "Make the article fun!" or "Aim this article for retired people" and you will get much better articles.

Anyway, thanks again man.

For those of you who say that you are 'inspired' by this thread, just remember the amount of hard work that Steve is putting into this project. it's far from being 'money for nothing'. If Steve is doing well it's because

1. He took action.
2. He continued taking action.
3. When he had setbacks, he took more action.

He's done nothing 'special' here that other people couldn't do equally well.

You are absolutely right Pearson.. I am so happy that so many people have found inspiration from this thread, in fact I am amazed by the amount of positive vibes I am seeing from people following this thread.

I know it is hard when you are starting out, there are so many new buzz words, ideas, strategies and the big gurus out there pounce on that and sell you a dream by capitalizing on this. However, take the time to learn and the quickest way of doing this is to actually take action and you will avoid all the pitfalls normal newbies fall into. There is always someone willing to explain a buzzword or terminology that you are not familiar with.

I hope that the overriding point of this whole challenge is that you CAN achieve your goals but ONLY if you are willing to put in the graft, imagination and energy. I spent my first few years in Internet marketing believing that there was some sort of secret to making a good living online and of course like everyone you believe the hype that there is. The truth is, the real secret is actually the sum total of your efforts and determination to find a winning strategy and just go with it.

Hello Steve, this is great stuff you have here. I like the sound of your ways of obtaining traffic. As you said 'very organic method' in building.

This might be a silly question, but right now I buy domains with existing traffic, then use them to link to my main site. I do get many visits in little time... however; if I was to use Adsense with this method, do you think that would result in a ban or disqualification from google? I wrote to the google Adsense team, but no reply from them, as if they're probably thinking ''''grrrrrr, what a con artist not using our Adwords, cheating into the organic se!! We sentence squiddy to forever banishment!!'''' lol. Anyway, if you know anything about it, that'd be cool :-)

Best of luck Steve,

Regards

I don't believe that sending traffic from existing sites will cause a problem with adsense. So long as you are following the Adsense TOS and not using gimmicks or anything that might get these visitors on to your site artificially to click on ads. As always, it is a good idea to check with google themselves who are notoriously slow at replying sometimes.

The only problem that might occur is if your traffic is not targeted enough to the ads which could effect your adsense account's "smart pricing" if conversions from those visitors are abnormally low for the advertisers.

It is actually a good strategy of getting traffic that you are doing. I have done it myself with small success for affiliate sites. Some domains I have bought have lived up to their potential but some haven't. I probably need to hone my skills at choosing domains to buy at auction a bit more.

Hello Steve and Group.

This is a great thread, but I must admit I skipped through being too lazy to read all 18 pages of content. Hopefully I gathered enough to get the jest of things.

I would like to ask some questions, hoping they have not been asked before.

1. WordPress. From what I read, it seems wordpress is part of your marketing strategy. I was wondering why you think it is a better tool for marketing than other formats? Is it because of the pinging service, the RSS or the interaction via comments with readers? Did I miss anything? This leads to another question. If there are certain tools that makes WordPress better at marketing a site, can’t those same tools be used with other platforms (i.e. adding RSS to a static site, a pinging serivce, etc). I guess to answer that question we would need to know first what tools or features makes WordPress such a good marketing format. I'm a drupal fan myself and think it has the same marketing features that lend to wordpress being a good marketing tool .. any thoughts?

2. Servers. I think I read somewhere that you use hostmonster as your host. Do you find that certain hosts and server types (i.e. shared, vps, dedicated) make your marketing efforts more profitable. Part of me wonders if shared may hinder a person's adsense efforts if it is too slow or other factors preventing it from running as smoothly as possible. Is one platform (shared, vps, dedicated) better for adsense than another?

3. Wordpress Format. When I browse the net, in general I see WordPress in two types of formats. One using static pages that almost looks like a html web site. V.S. the post type where a page may have several short comments on it. I was wondering if you thought one or the other lends itself to being more profitable. I’m no expert, but it seems the more profitable marketers, lean towards the short daily news type comments and updates with 10 or 15 updates on a page. What are your thoughts?

Thanks Steve for sharing. When it is all said and done, I would love to see a list of tools and sites you recommend using on one page. While skimming I noticed a few

– WordPress
– RSS submit
– Max Banner Ads
– Bookmarking Demon

cheers

I've read all the way through this and I'm interested to see how it goes. I don't think its that hard really, but i think it will take a bit of planning. I've got a site that I market primarily through craigslist and a daily pass through CL will net me about 200 or so visitors. With just a single adwords block, that will making $8-$10, and usually get about 5 people on my mailing list. Those arent awe inspiring numbers, but they are ok and CL is really just one slice of a huge site marketing pie to push a site along.

I think its probably very possible with cl/articles/other community sites/..etc.

Hi not sure if this is the right section but Ive been following this thread and its great ! Ive just got a question. I have a friends business website an old statice one for a dancing studio ...... would it be best to delete that website and setup a wordpress blog and have pages within that blog to promote the dancing studio ..... while having the blog at the front to sell related products ? Or would you have the static website as the first page and have a blog attached to that ? Sorry if its a silly question just not sure on the correct way to link the two together Thanks

There is no such thing as a silly question.. Is the static site getting traffic? Personally I would leave the static site as it is and build a blog in addition to it for more news related information about the dance studio.

Hey steve, I know you are busy and it is tough to keep up to all the questions, so I did some research. I found your european cruise blog which answered my questions above so no need to answer. It looks like it is going to be tough, but your effort is to be commended.

I read a few of your articles and I do have some other questions. It looked like you used ezine for a lot of the articles. I'm not a wordpress expert, but I had a hard time getting around and I think there were maybe 15 articles total. Did you get your articles all from article directories or did you use one of those article writing scripts? I ask about the article writer because some of the articles were not very specific and that has been my experience from using those automated writers, which I don't use any more.

It looks like you may reach about 10 or 15 percent of your goal in 100 days. Hey, 15 or 20 bucks in 100 days is still more than the average joe can receive. Still a good effort and one that many can strive for if they follow your advise. It is nice to see someone come to the plate like you have and open up to those who are looking for some guidance. Good luck.

Thanks Steve The static site isnt getting that much traffic, but I wanted to setup a blog to rank for good keywords to do with Bridal Dancing, with adsense and also some affiliate DVD products. Would this also push the main site ranking higher ? The Static site is horrible though LOL.. would you have a url of a similiar site setup that I could get an idea of how I should set it up ?

Hi Steve,

I know it's early days but what's your geographical visitor breakdown looking like so far - is it mainly US traffic, UK or a mix. Are you targetting a specific region or is it a case of all traffic is good. As it's a .com with the term 'European Cruises' I would guess you are targetting the US market more than the UK?

Also wondered where you got your articles from - was it one of the marketplace sites like elance or do you use a specific warrior or other source and do you use the same writer for all your articles? I guess that would make sense once you found a good one - it's finding a really good one in the first place that's been the hard part for me (still looking!).

Thanks for your time.

Steve I wish you luck with this, I really really hope you pull it off. I have AdSense blogs myself and I would kill for $10 a day from any one site, let alone $100. Anyway I hope you make it, or come close (or surpass it even).

I know you stated in the beginning you were not going to use Firepow for this challenge, but do you think it would have made the task easier.. ?

Most of what Firepow does can be done manually like what I am doing with this challenge but yes, Firepow would have made the whole process easier.
