Adwords: You advertise with ads on Google and pay for clicks, your ads appearing on Google and other people's sites.

AdSense: You display the Google ads on YOUR site and you GET paid for clicks.

For Adwords, you need an Adwods account where you can make ads, set a budget, set your maximum bid, target keywords or specific sites etc..

For AdSense, you need an AdSense account, you can specify various formats for ads and put the code on your site(s). Adsense then "reads" the content of your site and automatically displays Ads matching the content of your site/audience.

Eg if you have a weight loss site it will display ads related to weight loss, those ads where AdWORDS advertizers pay for their clicks - your share is a percentage of that, it's 68%.

    BASICALLY:

It's all the same thing - but seen from two different ends. One time you are the advertizer (adwords), the other time you are the publisher (adsense).

What is important is that the Google ads are an auction/bid system with people "bidding" for keywords and their ads to appear on google (or on other sites). Those bids ("CPC" / cost per click) can very GREATLY from a few pennies to $50 per click.

If you do Adsense, you would preferably want to make sites where you know that the Ads which would appear are high CPC ads which give a high CPC/cost per click.

(For example, insurance, financial etc. are all very high CPC.)

This means you get MORE money for each click as opposed to subjects/sites which have a low CPC...where you might only get $0.10 or so per click.

Of course, there is more to it, for example "CTR" which means "click through rate". If you have a site doing Adsense, you want a high CTR which simply means you want people to click on the ads. (Eg. a 5% CTR would mean that people on your site called up 100 pages and 5 ads were clicked, making it a 5% click through rate, in relation to how many pages are viewed.)

High CTR can be achieved by good layout of the ads, but often requires a lot of testing of ads placement, ads colors etc.

Another factor is traffic quality and origin of your site's traffic. Clicks from 3rd world countries pay less (because) they tend to convert less than eg. traffic from US/UK etc.

AdSense is also very strict when it comes to ad placement on your site, needless to say you cannot click on your own ads, encourage others to click or use dirty tricks to fool people clicking your ads. They are also getting stricter in weeding out lower quality sites recently, dupe content sites etc.

This makes sense if you know that with Adsense, Google is your CLIENT and you are basically given the privilege to display their ads on YOUR site and make money with Google.

Google has no interest to have their ads appear on low quality sites or have their ads on sites with thrash traffic which hardly converts. People need to realize this and stop the autoblogging nonsense.

      Hi straz,

I thought someone should tell you that you need to have your keyboard repaired. Apparently the "y" and "o" keys don't seem to be working when the two letters are pressed consecutively.

Had to laugh at that! I'm always picking on people for their bad grammar and spelling too!

        And text talk - UGH!
