If I have a site the interior page already ranks for the relevant search term better than the home page, do I build back links to the home page or to the interior page?

You build backlinks to whichever page you want to rank better than it currently does.

For myself, as an article marketer, my backlinks tend to come in pairs, and I'll usually have one to my site's home page and one to "some other interior page", so my landing page typically gets 50% of all my backlinks and the other pages (which I want to optimise) each get a smaller proportion, in inverse proportion to their number.

    Interior page.

I always deep link to individual pages so that I can get multiple listings for each keyword because multiple pages rank well on their own.

If your pages link back to the home page then you're still passing juice but you want to make the most relevant page the one that ranks best.

Both of course but focus a lot of time also on the home page as Google gives that a lot of weight in the algo.

I don't believe that's true - The home page gets treated no differently to any other page.

I'd love to see the evidence to support this as it's not my experience so I find it hard to believe.

The more targeted your landing page, the better, so yes, linking to an interior page is very important.

As always, you don't want ALL your links to go to just one page, so spread things out a bit.
