I am trying to get my site up to the top of the Google results, but I am just wondering, what is worth to spend more time on, backlinks or content creation? or are they both about the same in importance?

I am, but so many hours in a day....

Another question, of all backlinks ( article directories, forums etc) which are the strongest, or does it not matter as long as it is from a high PR site?

Both are VERY important! If you can I would focus more on the content. Fresh content is loved by Google. Back links are good as well, but if you can create an article a day or write in your blog everyday, it will pay off.

This takes time, but don't give up!

I am a crazy blogger, I do like 3 or 4 minimum posts a day, but if content is really important, I will do more, it's something I don't really see any of my competitors doing as much of.

Wow, you sound like a prolific writer. I would advise to do one post a day and devote the remaining time to building links. Why not offer the remaining 2 or 3 posts a day to fellow bloggers as guest posts? This will improve your rankings considerably.

If you build your site up to a decent amount of well written content, how much that is depends on how broad your market or niche is, it is much easier to find backlinking opportunities.

It's not really an either/or proposition. You need enough content to be able to handle a large amount of backlinks. For instance, with a three pages ite, you would not want to be having 9,000 backlinks, in most cases anyway.

But with a larger site, maybe 50 or 60 pages, you can support a great amount of backlinks from a large amount of sources with many differing keyword phrases as the anchor texts.

I think both are necessary. Good content and backlinks are both needed.

Good question. This is from my personal experience though:

To push your site up in rankings (meaning you are sitting anywhere below top10)
    1. Fresh content
    2. If you are really busy, spin your fresh content and submit them with AMR. Open 2.0s and submit the spun articles too. Blast the articles and 2.0s with lots of comments, bookmarks and profiles.

It took me about 30 minutes to write a 500 words article for my niche and about 1 hour to properly spin it. AMR submission and 2.0s were done by AMR (duh!) and SENukeX respectively overnight. I'll wait one day for the AMR submissions to get some articles approved and blast them with Scrapebox the next day.

If you are going slow, do this once a week. If you are the aggressive type, you could do it everyday

I outsource my profiles building on Fiverr by the way.

For lazy man style - outsource these steps:
    1. Someone to write you an article - $5
    2. Someone to open 2.0s, bookmark and blast them with comments - $5
    3. Someone to blast your articles with comments - $5
    4. Profiles campaign - $5

For maintaining your ranks once you are on top 10:
Moderately competitive niche - Fresh content and linkbuilding campaign at least once a month.
Slightly competitive niche - Fresh content and linkbuilding about 2 to 3 months would be fine.

Note: I have found that all you need is about 200+ words posts would be good enough to keep your site's ranking.

Note #2: These are just a very basic description for a my typical campaign, you could add or take out any of these steps with your own. If you have a very tough niche, you'll need a lot more ingredients that what was described above each campaign to be effective though.

    Hope that helps

I've been chatting to someone who tells me backlinks are all but useless now, that the major se's don't take them into account anymore.

I've only recently started building niche sites so I'm not too sure myself, not got to grips with algorithms and all the technical stuff yet.

Is anyone here of the same opinion?...

Both are important but you should first concentrate on your content, it should be unique and then go for backlinks which should be done by white hat way.

Both are important, because whatever your sites money methods are you need content, relevant, not necessarily brilliant content, but it must fit the purpose.

Links will get your ranking moving quickly, but the length of time visitors stay on your site, after they find you in the rankings will also affect your overall rank.

    Hence you need both things.
