Cuil the newly born search engine is already sending me some traffic. So far what I have observed is that if you have exact keywords in <title> tag then you may find your website on the first page of cuil's SERP's. I also noticed that they are neglecting <description> tags. Please check your positions there.

Secondly if you are ranking on first or second page of Google then you will most probably be ranking on the first page of cuil's SERP's.

Check your webstats and good luck..

Interesting. I typed my domian in Cuil and the search still couldn't find my site. Maybe they will get better. It seems to me if someone types in a domain name that should be first in the list of results.

      • Here is an article on Time that was written shortly after the launch of Cuil (article dated July 28, 2008 to be exact). The article is short and it seems to cover most of the major issues.

Why Cuil Is No Threat to Google - TIME

I have put Cuil on my list to look at as an interesting source of traffic, but I have not yet gotten around to finding out how to find out the following:

        1. Profile of Cuil user.
        2. System for detecting search traffic numbers.
        3. How to register a site in the Cuil directory.

Something else to do, but it could mean more money if Cuil has a lot of users...

For those of you considering investing your resources in this new search engine, I thought you might want to look at how it compares to it's peers. If you look near the bottom right hand corner you will see it's blue line.

It got lot of press when it was launched, I wonder if they can retain users.

Does anyone here use it on a regular basis?

Cuil's not ready. They built the index but their ranking algorithms are nowhere near refined enough to go mainstream. They have to have known that.

Which means the PR blitz was to serve a different purpose: to attract enough users to prove the technology works and scales, and to get on the radar of everyone that watches technology startups.

They have already raised $33 million to develop as far as they have, but they'll definitely need more than that for the resources and time they need to build out and work on this for another year or two minimum to get a usable product. The coverage they got on launch will get the rest of the venture capital investing community to the table to make that happen.

PR dollars well spent I'd say.

                Hi Dan,

                That's exactly my take.

I believe they need to focus on usability as well as SERPs. I have tried it and find it that it seems to work best when you use 3 columns and hit the F11 key to make it more scannable.

I have began to notice little things that are nice about it. Like how it groups related SERPs into tabs. You just don't notice this stuff until you start using it.

The traffic according to alexa shows a dramatic drop after end of July... It was because press or they dumped lots of money for making press

                Hi ketyung,

I wouldn't put too much confidence in Alexa's data.

I think much of Cuil's initial traffic came from people who own websites, just checking to see if their site was listed.

These folks are the only ones likely to have the Alexa toolbar installed, which is where much of Alexa's data comes from and why it is so skewed.

I find that Compete and especially Quantcast tend to have much more accurate numbers than Alexa.
