  • Hi Esther. Here is the simplest, most basic way to perform keyword research.

    1) Make a giant list of every possible phrase a potential customer would use in search of your website.

    2) Group this giant list of phrases into many small lists so that the keywords in each list are all related to one another.

    3) Answer 3 questions for each keyword 1 by 1.

How many people are searching for this keyword?
-use the adwords tool to find search volume

How many other pages are competing for this keyword?
-use intitle:"keyword" AND inanchor:"keyword" in Google
-record the total number of results returned

What is the likelihood someone is interested in buying when they search using this phrase?
-take an educated guess on a scale of 1-10

4)This now gives you a giant list of phrases with search volume, competition & buyer intent. Pick out the keywords with the most search volume, least competition & most buyer intent.

    5) Optimize your website using this list.

  • ^ true.. stick to the keyword relevancy of your website.. plus check the competition and monthly searches.. and if you are Geo Targeting try to include the local Search for your chosen KW's.
  • Market Samurai and MNF will help
  • Look into Keyword Sniper Pro. If I had it when I started, I think I'd be much further ahead than I am now. It basically does everything for you in terms of finding good keywords.

    • Hey, John. I see you're a fan, too. KS Pro is a wonderful keyword tool and one I use as well. Jack Duncan is a whiz at keyword research and put the goods together with that program.

But always remember, folks, - that thing between your ears and some common sense really does help when brainstorming (haha) keyword lists.
