how to recognise authority sites?

is it those which have high PR + 100+ indexed pages + on google top 10?

I ask this for keyword research. If I type a potential keyword in google I would like to, using SEO Quake, be able to recognise which are the authority sites in that top 10.

    and it will tell you the PR of any domain. Domains with a PR of 6+ are considered authority sites.

    If your going after keywords, I would say Google would consider any site with "Google Sitelinks" as a keyword authority in that specific niche.

    Example, I'll use the keywords :

    1) Search for the keyword pc wallpaper. The #1 site is www.desktopnexus.com

    2) Do another search to see If this #1 site has "Google Sitelinks" desktopnexus, as you can see they do have "Google Sitelinks" in the Google search.



    If your doing keyword research to find out which sites are ranking for a specific keyword, than PR has nothing at all to do with your research.

    If your looking for authority backlinks, that's totally different, & you can sort SERP results based on PR with seoquake with a single click (small down arrow upper left of seoquake toolbar (while in the SERPs)).

      This is one of those questions that you are likely to get a different answer from each member replying. So please allow me to give my answer, which will probably differ from most others.

      We can all come up with our own definition for what we personally regard as authority. However, how useful it it to define it any other way than the way search engines define it?

      Google measures authority with their PageRank algorithm, however, if you think you can just look at the PR of a page and know how much authority it holds for a particular keyword you are wrong. Typically, that collective authority is spread out over a number of keywords and it might hold very little authority for the particular keyword you are analyzing. You must dig a little deeper to get meaningful data.

      I believe authority should be viewed as a relative value. For example, a page with little PR could be the most authoritative page in the index, for a particular keyword, if there are none with greater relevant backlinks. Relevancy is paramount in determining page authority for a particular keyword. Irrelevant backlinks may add PR to a page but not improve that page's authority for a particular keyword.

      The quickest and easiest way to see how a page compares, relative to others, for authority is to use the allinanchor: search operator with the keyword. Google search will return results ranked in order of authority for the keyword you are analyzing.

  • The main sign of authority is sitelinks
  • If the site is an authority site you will often see many internal pages ranking high for their long tail keywords with very little links pointing to the page. This inner page has the ability to rank so high with so little links all because of the authority google has placed on the root domain.

    Examples of sites like this are often ehow.com about.com and so on.

    3 of my main money sites are now considered authority sites in googles algo and I am able to rank my inner pages on the first page of google within 24 hours of the page going live. Pretty nice for long tail traffic!
