Backlinks - is that it?

Well, I just saw a PR4 site, an it has a 505 error, and seems that the site has been down for a few months already. But it has got many backlinks, I checked. So does that means as long as your website got many backlinks pointing to it, you will get high PR? Content/traffic doesn't matter? Only backlinks?

  • If I'm not mistaken, the only factor to Page Rank is backlinks and the PR of those.

Try and get a hold of that site with the 505, and do a 301 redirect to one of your sites, and you'll see a gigantic boost in your rankings and PR.
  • Not to mention that one way links bear much more weight than reciprocal links.
  • It's hard to say. The PR updates every few months or so. It's possible that the site has good content, but just recently got the 505 error in the past few weeks.
  • Well it's a number of factors, but yes, backlinks are the backbone of SEO. More importantly though, optimized backlinks (which are backlinks with the anchor text of your keyword)
  • If it's homepage is currently showing an error it's PR will probably go in the next update.
  • Your own PR is primarily the result of the PR of your backlinks.

That said, PR isn't the be-all-end-all. If you've got a site that's terribly optimized for your keywords it's going to be hard to rank well, no matter how many high quality backlinks you've created.
  • Page Rank algo of Google depends on many things but basically it counts the Page rank of your backlinks.
Still we can not say exactly what measures Google count as it keep changing from time to time!
  • PR is determined by the number & quality of incoming links (aka backlinks).
