Are Meta Tags Keywords?

Following the Meta tag thread, seems that 'Description Meta tags' still offer some confusion.

My belief is that Description Meta Tags are just to offer search engines a description of your site following a keyword that has been searched.

Sure, your 'Description Meta tags' can have variations of your keywords but do they help you climb search engine rankings?

I'm sure this thread is unlikely to clear this up as it seems very much a matter of opinion.

I have some very competitive keywords that rank very high on page 1 and I have never never created backlinks for these pages. Only thing that I did was SEO'd them to the hilt using meta tags -- so go figure -- make sure you have a good sitemap

Meta Descriptions show up below your site Title when your site shows up for a Google search. You want to write them to help get your site clicked on, and to boost your SEO.

Google also uses them in ranking (No one is 100% sure, but from my experience it seems that way).

I think Google only has like 70% of the search engine market, and other search engines DO use the Meta Description and the Meta Keyword, so they're worth filling out.

They take all of a minute to add and optimize. They can help with click thru rates and conversions. Definitely take the extra bit of time to add them and optimize.

160 characters, get the main keyword in there 1-2 times, get a synonym in there, and write something enticing to improve click through.

I think you will find that neither Google or the other search engines use 'description meta tags' for rankings. They are used to describe your site, nothing more.

Google will use the description meta tag in your listing in Google.

Having a description meta tag gives you control of what your listing says and can boost your CTR.

If you do not use a description meta tag, Google will pull the text from your webpage. This can led to less then great results especially if you use a top or left side navigation.

The description tag is not used in Google ranking.

The keywords tag has be depreciated do to spamming use and is not use by most search engine.

The title meta tag is very important and is weighted heavily in seo ranking.

The title should me less then 65 characters and should contain your most important keyword/phrase. It is best to get the phrase as near the left as possible.

The phrase should match the theme of the page and should help make the page unique compared to other pages on your site. If you repeat the same phrase everywhere, Google tends to only list a few of the pages and provide a link to filtered results.

Meta tags are keywords for sure, search engines pay enough attention to them.
False! Meta tags are not looked by Google. I wouldn't waste your time w/ them. However, the meta tag description is only to entice searchers to click on your site - so always write a good meta description.
