Do non-link mentions of your website help?

What if somebody from a newspaper (high credibility) writes an article and mentions your website by name, such as... blah blah blah MySite.com. Does that help at all with SEO? It's not configured as a link. Do you think a search engine would pick that up and give it any value?

Doubt it, but it might drive some traffic. Why not ask the paper to link to your site?

It doesn't unless that newspaper is indexed on Google and shown up. That's called a press release and you can get hundreds of those over at exposureking.com - hope that helped.

It's not a press release. Did you even read his question?

BTW, the piece ran two days ago. I googled my site name today (simply as 'mysite.com') and found the article on page 3. Haha, that might not mean anything, but there it is.

That makes sense, but it won't help your rankings. Hopefully it boosted your traffic a little though. I'd still contact the paper and see if they'll change it to a link.

I think you gotta go back to the famous quote of "any press is good press"

Sure it wont provide a high power backlink, but as you stated you it is online (page 3). And anything mentioned about your site will help is credibility and people awareness of it.

Nice job getting in the paper!

If this is offline publication you are talking, might not help. But if it is an online publication site that tells a story about your site or reference your site through a non-link mention, then this can be counted as citation. I can't post links yet so I suggest you search for "co citation" on Google if you wish to learn more on this topic.

Basically, a mention of your site URL, though non-linked, could count as a vote by mention, most especially if it comes from reputable entities online such as yellow pages and local business listings of some sort. With microformats, the non-linked url could be identified by search engines and analyze it with other keywords in the page. Website aiming for local rankings are employing SEO citation techniques to help improve their visibility in local search.

won't help for seo (unless you are talking about citations for local maps),
but it helps for reputation management since it is good noise.

A non-linked website does not count for anything SEO related.
Finding a quote about a website has nothing to do with that
website showing in SERPs. Mixing apples and oranges.

Type-in trafffic from curious visitors is not SEO.

The Web consists of links and pages.

SE spiders crawl links to get from page to page.

No link = no crawling = no difference.
