From a google perspective, what are they going to do in the future?

How is it going to affect advertising?

Alot of people are now using mobile to access the internet and within a few years there might be a higher amount of mobile users using the internet rather than people using the traditional PC.

Mobile is changing search by making places available based on what friends in your local network have been to and recommend.

There's some Google statistic out there that shows that 1 in 3 mobile searches is local. 84% of people who see mobile ads actually take action. I've seen it on the internet.

The mobile market is 5 times bigger than the internet market. About 1.8 Billion people are on the internet while about $5 Billion are on cell phones.

I don't know how it is over there but when I search here on google.ca for local long tail keywords G. will show me the same Places both on my iPhone and on the desktop.
As for what "they" are doing: it has a mobile version because at the bottom of the page is telling me: View Google in: Mobile | Classic

For me the more important question is - what are the companies/businesses doing now, not so much in the future because when I am out there and looking for something... most of them do NOT have sites/versions optimized for mobile. I can't read them even with glasses and the phone number is so tiny that I touch five different links if I try to tap it

From where I stand this is what they are doing: losing my business as a customer. (On the other hand getting on my "to-do" list to contact them to make a mobile site for their business...)

I think it's important for local businesses, but I don't really see how or why things change for general information.
