hey guys was just wondering.
for instance you want to rank for two keywords,
lets say
cat food
dog food

if i were to buy a domain name which is
catanddogfood.com or
cat-dog-food.com

would it still help in ranking for both keywords
compared to something like
catfood.com
cat-food.com

any idea guys?

    Hi,

These keywords (cat food, dog food) are different search terms.

    - Register different domains for each keywords as having the right exact match domain helps in your ranking (not the only factor but still an important factor)

    - Besides availability of the EMDs, you should also need to know the competition on the Google page 1 search results

    - Many people have mixed results on domain with hyphens. Due to this inconsistency, I will try to avoid getting such domains.

    Hope this helps.

If you are speaking strictly from the intention to leverage 100% on the positive effect of EMDs, it's not advisable.

If EMDs are not in your considerations, many options are available but will take you much more effort to rank.

One suggestion is to get an LSI domain and create separate pages for both. Having separate pages will enhance visitor experience (visitor get specific landing page) and its less messy to SEO individually.

        For eg. (for discussion sake),
        www. cheappetfood. com/dogfood.html
        www. cheappetfood. com/catfood.html

With this, you can also target the 3rd keyword = "cheap pet food" in your SEO effort.

Just a thought. My 2 cents.

    Both are fine.

If it's not an EXACT match domain (catfood.com or dogfood.com) it won't be as strong anyway.

So catanddogfood.com would be helpful in ranking for both terms, but not as much as two separate domains.

People often forget though, 2 separate domains means less information, less pages, less backlinks than one combined site targeting both domains.

For this reason I think catanddogfood (or similar) would be a good option.

Remember, domain names don't have a huuuuge impact on rankings.

My suggestion - stop wasting time and start building backlinks to whatever domain you choose!!

    Hope this helps.

Don't know if its the best way to go any more but its what I opted to do for my .info domain. My two words are short (10 letters combined, no hyphen) & go fit together, which might give them some "stick" value in terms of repeat traffic. I've revisited sites I liked and hadn't been to just because when the impulse came I could type the URL from memory. I'm assuming some others do that too.

Site structure can be quite important, and may want to consider a general keyword that you've proven is a good keyword, for example pets.com.

Under pets.com, you'd have child pages that are relevant such as cat food, dog food, dog training, cat tips etc., under each of those "sub niches" you can also consider more subcategories such as, dog collars, how to deal with fleas, clipping cat claws, dealing with dog breath etc.

In other words, your Home page is the general targeted keyword of your niche, and everything below it is linked back to each category page and each of those back to the Home page.

    Just a few thoughts.
