keyword confusion: please help!

I have been doing a lot of keyword research trying to find a low competition keyword for my niche which happens to be a high competition niche.

When doing the research, I looked at the top 10 sites on google and some were article directories, yahoo answers, and some others. I have heard that that is good because those are easy to beat out because they are weak sites, and i have heard that they also have a ton of backlinks to its hard to beat out.

So basically should i pick that keyword phrase and have an easy time beating the "weak" sites, or keep looking for more keywords because those sites are hard to beat?

Thank you for your time

  • Check the backlinks of the top 3 sites and see what you are going to be up against.

Generally when I see article directories ranking for the keyword I want to use its generally a good sign for me, but sometimes those articles have been backlinked. You need to check for this with yahoo answers also.

You say keyword phrase, when you are doing keyword research make sure you are using exact match and not phrase or broad. I dont know if you have done this but it is common to make this mistake.

    • ya i do an exact phrase. Ill even do the allinurl: and allintitle: ways of searching to see as exact as i can. Yahoo answers shows up, sometimes article directories. and what about youtube, if that shows up is it bad?

Also, i use SEOquake to determine backlinks and what not, but what does the huge number next to domain signify? for google and yahoo?

    • My niche is in the fitness/health niche. Not sure how much more detail I should go into, but it is a highly competitive niche is I were to try to target more basic keywords, which is why im trying to target long tail keywords which are less competitive

  • Why do you have to stay in that niche? Sell what you have and move on.

  • Maybe I am just lazy, but I put the keyword into Traffic Travis and let that tell me if the keyword is easy or hard. Takes the emotion out of it, and that software can tell me in just a very short time.
