[Case Study] My adventures promoting in a competitive niche

Well I got inspired to do this from another thread I saw on here and figured why not do something similar.

I'm going to use this thread as a "journal" per say and detail my adventures promoting in a "competitive" niche from keyword research to my first sale.

The niche: Health and fitness
Keywords: The main keyword I'm targeting receives 12,100 broad match searches and 2,900 exact match searches per month. Competing pages = 72,000.

Taking advantage of namecheap's $1.99 domain sale, I've decided to make this keyword my exact match domain (.org and using the plural "s").

The plan: Write 5 articles targeting keywords which receive at least 3,900 exact searches per month, have a long standing upward trend in "Google trends" and have at maximum 700,000 competing pages. Page rank does not matter.

After I've written these 5 articles I'll do the usually article marketing (all manual) in addition to building web 2.0 link wheels for each one. Each article will then be made into a video and posted to YouTube. All links in these articles/videos will point to a squeeze page where the visitor will enter in their email ONLY in return for a free ebook. I plan on split testing between a free ebook and a free video.

I'll be using a customized version of this free wordpress theme; Intrepidity WordPress Theme | Top Blog Formula

I'll be promoting a Clickbank product and my autoresponder series will be as follows;

1 - Send the free ebook
2 - Two days later send a free video
3 - 2 days later send a free article which also presells the affiliate product without ever mentioning it
4 - 3 days after that promote the affiliate product in full
5 - 2 days after that promote the affiliate product again and include another free article/tip

The exit strategy: Depending on how much the site makes and how fast is does so, my exist plan would be to flip the site for 12 x monthly profit. If the site makes a decent income then I will keep it for myself

During this time at no point will paid traffic, ad swaps, JV's or any form of paid product will be used (this includes market samurai etc). I aim to keep you all posted. Wish me luck!

    I'm looking into some competitive keywords and niches myself. The way I see it, any keyword is rankable, you just need to be willing to invest more. A buddy of mine ONLY goes after big, highly competitive keywords in the ULTRA-competitive hosting affiliate niche. As he tells it "I may spend $1,000 to build and backlink it, but I'll make 10 times that within a year"

    Good luck to you Scott, I'll be looking forward to your updates!
