Google Keyword Tool question

I know a lot of people use Market Samari and other programs to do keyword research in niche areas, but I've been looking around the Google Keyword Tool and I keep looking at the "Competition" area. How accurate is that competition for each keyword? I've found some keywords with a lot of monthly global searches and low competition. I've also found some very good domain names to go with them.

Thanks so much.

It kind of depends on how your filters are set, but my best suggestion would be to look up the keywords in Google with quotation marks to see exactly how many sites come up for the exact match search.
Also, it's not so much about how many sites there are to compete with as it is which ones are occupying the top spots.
Also, be careful that the words your looking to target are profitable.
Are the people using them looking for something that they're willing to pay for or are they just looking for information.
A good indication is if there are any adsense ads on the SERP.
    Hope this helped

Also try to google your keyword with inurl:"keyword" and intitle:"keyword". The number of sites gives the indicator of level of competitors who bother to optimize for the keyword

The competition bar is just for adwords and has nothing to do with SEO competition.

I use traffic travis for my seo analysis
I also use backlinkwatch.com to check how many anchor text of the keyword I am targeting and you can check the Page rank of each backlink which is important.

Both of these tools are free and work fine for me.

    hope that helps

Actually i found traffic travis to be pretty useless. It rated a keyword I'm ranking pretty good for as "Hard" and a keyword that you have absolutly no chance "nude women" as "relatively easy". Although I still like it as a general overview of my competitions on site SEO (Just so i don't have to type the search string into google and analyse the pages / PR etc.)

the best way to understand how hard it is to rank or beat your competition is to complete a backlink analysis to your competitors sites. While using the keyword in quotes in google can give you an idea of the size of your market and a good strating point it is really the top 10 sites in google that you want to review and see their backlinking strategy

        Cheers

that is exactly what I use it for. You cant let any program tell you how easy a keyword is to rank for. You have to analysis the pagerank, number of backlinks, quality of backlinks, anchor text, Age, ON page seo of the top 10.

I am a bit unsure how profitable these keywords are. (I'm thinking it might be more people just looking for information.) For one I found that there were two ads to the right in the google search. If I understand what you are saying, this would indicate that the keywords were not as profitable?

Interesting, I checked one and the competition was even lower. I'll look more into that strategy!

Ok, so basically it's just people buying ads for this keyword? That makes sense since it is from Google AdWords.

Still learning who to figure all that out. Thanks though!

You really should go ahead and get the free version of market samauri and then look up some tutorials on how to use it youtube.

This will probably save you a lot of time in the long run.

That competition bar is just the Adwords competition. For a true competition analysis, I like to just go look at the results on page 1 myself and analyze them by hand - call me old-fashioned, but at least I know it's getting done correctly. If you want to enhance your keyword research abilities, look into Keyword Sniper Pro 2.0 from Jack Duncan.

You will find with google keyword tool that the competition is more so for the adwords competition instead of for seo

if possible I will suggest you to use market samurai seo competition module to check. What you should be concern of are the top 10 websites ranking for your keywords. Nothing else matter. Check to see if their websites are optimized and the number of backlinks they have etc.
