I know that having a continual plan to get good links to my site is very important to help my web site be found. What is real number of new links i should be trying to achieve on a monthly basis or is there an ideal number? Please suggest.
Thanks in advance.

Not really a suggested number. Just make sure you don't over do it at the beginning and the amount you do create is sustainable.

The best rule of thumb is Quality over Quantity. If you are building links in start with enthusiasm, try to maintain every week and month.

There is no specific number of backlinks needed in building links. Build links as much as you can and maintain your consistency.

It's impossible to give a number. It firstly depends on your keywords and the level of competition. YOu might need thousands of links to rank for "cheap holidays". But if you only want to rank for " cheap holidays to Bosnia in the middle of winter" then it's a safe bet you will need much less links.

If you really do need a number, the best way is to analyze your competition. But like the fellow BM's in this thread said, do not overlook the quality of links and focus only on the numbers. In fact, i bet if you analyze a few of your competition sites, you will see that the higher sites are not the ones with the largest number of links. Rather, they probably have better quality links, or older domain ages etc.

Keep in mind, the more time you spend off your site, leaves you less time on your site.

Personally, I feel that its content over links. That if you create good content, other people will link to your site.

The real power in link building is not one person trying to create 100 links, but 100 people who like your site creating links for you.

There's no real number that you should strive for. I'd say that consistency, diversity, and quality are the most important. You definitely want contextual backlinks, but don't be afraid to order some bulk packages here and there either.

Just make sure your anchor text isn't too spammy. A few "click heres" or "www.mywebsite.com" will help keep you under the radar.

Also note that when I say consistency, I don't mean building 500 links every single month. Just make sure you don't blast 50,000 and stop randomly. There'll be months where I build 10,000 links and others where I might only get around to doing 1,000.
